I have a bit of a problem.....
Car in question: '98 SL2 with factory security system Problem: Only had one key and one remote for the vehicle. They were both lost. Went to saturn, and had 2 new keys cut. They work the doors and ignition just fine, but as soon as I opened the door, the horn started beeping and the car would not start. I have 2 replacement remotes, as well, but they are not programmed to the car. I am familiar with the remote programming sequence, but since the car's alarm is going off, it won't let me into programming mode. I tried disconnecting the battery to silence the alarm, but as soon as I reconnect it, and try to open the door, or work the ignition, the alarm goes off again. Is there any way I can reset the security system myself, or do I have to bite the bullet and have the car towed to the dealership? If it goes to the dealer, what would they have to do? Is it something done with a scantool or are there hard parts that would have to be replaced? Just looking for some input. Thanks in advance! John P. |

You need to install a temporary jumper across pins 4 and 8 in the OBD-II connector, and then synchronize all of your remotes to the car before removing the jumper wire.
On mine, if the alarm is going off, and I insert the key and turn it to "RUN", and then flip the toggle switch on my alarm to "VALET" mode, that kills the alarm. But mine is a fairly unique system. It is an aftermarket alarm, but uses the Saturn RKE remotes. The dealer delivered the vehicle to me new with that system installed, even though it was an aftermarket installation. WAIT 30 minutes after turning the key in the igntion to run and then back to off. The system will reset (alarm off) allow you to start the car and then allow you to access program mode.

Thanks for the input wolfman! The car is now back in my driveway and running fine. After letting it sit for the 30 or so minutes you described, everything was back to normal.
You just saved me a tow and a service bill. Thank you so much. John P. |

Can I disable the security feature on my 99 SL1? but still have the remotes unlock the doors.
I cant really wait 30 minutes to start my car if the remote goes south. Thanks in advance for any help! ![]() |
