The Saturn donor cars are getting thin around here. My options are limited from local junk yards anyway.
Can I swap an auto trans from 2002 DOHC SC (two door coupe) INTO a 2000 SOHC SL (four door sedan)? I did look at the numbers stamped on the trans on the 2000 SL but I can't make them out, even under a magnifying glass. I *think* it is an MP6 model trans. I won't know what model trans the 2002 SC donor car has until Saturday. The local yard isn't open after 5pm weekdays. Do all 2002 model year SC have MP7 auto trans when equipped with DOHC engine? I don't think I can go MP7 to MP6 but I'm not sure. My thanks again! |

The MP7 came with all automatic DOHC cars and is NOT compatible with the MP6 that came with all automatic SOHC cars. Your best bet is a late 3rd gen MP6, but you can go back much farther. The intermediate shaft (and axle?) seals changed around 2001 and before that you should grab the intermediate shaft along with the tranny.

Thank you Anmasher!
That will expand my search criteria. One last related question for the forum: I don't know if this has been tried but does anyone know if the MP7 case and bellhousing be swapped for the MP6? My Moms SL has leaking trans due to diff pin movement. It has not exploded the bellhousing. I have the trans removed from the car. My local trans shop could swap out the internals from her current trans into a donor case. Is the case and bellhousing the same between the MP7 and MP6? I understand the internals are different of course, gear ratios, etc. I do have some concerns about the metal shavings created by the diff pin on the case so this would be a last resort. I'll be hitting up the local wreckers again on Saturday. Cheers All ! |

Verify the axle/intermediate shaft seal thing with search as I don't recall the exact specifics off the top of my head but there was a significant change somewhere in the middle of the 3rd generation.
The MP2 and MP3 are the same externally and the MP6 and MP7 are the same externally. All four bellhousings are a bolt-on swap. I would be extremely uncomfortable swapping a manual's internals after a diff pin failure, and wouldn't even consider doing that on an automatic. YMMV of course, but know that aluminum shavings have been floating around in it. |
