1997 SC2
Default Throwing two codes

My 1997 Sc2 is not suffering at all performance wise, but it is throwing two different codes at me: p0341 and p0420, from what I have read it could be either my o2 sensor or my cat. Bottom line is this something that I should have checked out or just change the o2 sensor first on my own.

Also this is my first post here on Saturnalia, I have gotten my fair share of info from here, and I figured that it was time for me to join in and get some advice from some very knowledgeable Saturn fans.

Thanks in advance

Default Re: Throwing two codes

Welcome to the forum. I too lurked and read for a long time before joining. This site is a great resource.

P0341 is a camshaft position sensor code. S series cars do not have a camshaft position sensor, so this code can confuse. The camshaft position is inferred by the PCM using voltage measurements on the 1 and 4 plugs. This code almost always indicates it is time for an ignition tune up. New plugs (NGK copper) and new mid-priced, direct fit plug wires are in order. It is a good idea to remove the coils and ICM and clean up the mounting points while at it. This should clear the P0341 code.

P0420 means the catalytic converter performance is below acceptable limits. This might be relieved by the above fix. Otherwise, if this is a 200k+ mile car or a major oil burner, the cat might have outlived its useful life. Exhaust leaks from the manifold to the cat can also cause this code.

So, fix the P0341 first and see what happens with the P0420.
