Default Question on Quill seal in Manual Transaxle

I was replacing my clutch and noted trans fluid on inside of bell that contaminated the disc. The rear main seal is dry. There are no holes in the housing.
Does anyone know the part number for that seal for the input shaft on the transaxle? Is there an exploded view of the seal anywhere on the net?
Is there a design flaw in these. I notice I have no pilot bearing that may keep that input shaft from flopping around.

replacing that seal assembly requires complete transmission disassembly and then special tools so as to not break the case.

The first thing you have to do is actually determine what is on the friction disk, engine oil or ATF. The seal does seep and if the level in the trans is clear up to the top of the crosshatch when its cold it is over filled. Middle of the crosshatch cold.

Usually, the source of disk contamination is a leaking cam cover. You will never see the leak. Oil runs down the left end of the engine and is sucked into those vent holes on the top of the bell housing. Look in the small divot right behind the EGR and see if its full of oil. If it is then you have a leaking cover.

Thank you for your reply. We are dealing with transmission fluid. When I opened it up, I first thought rear main seal but after removing the flywheel, all looked great and as clean as when it left the factory. Conversly, the backside of the throughout bearing and clutch fork were all saturated. Even with all that, the clutch never slipped. I changed it because of the chatter.

If its over filled it will leak. But you really do not want to go through the replacement. Its easier to just go dig up a nice new 2002 trans. You can not just desperate the bell housing from the transmission you have to start at the back end and take it all apart. Then supporting the case while pressing the old assembly out and pressing the new one in without the factory tools is a trick.

If you found a 2002 trans be sure that you get the intermediate shaft with it also. Design change in the middle of the 2000 model year. Be sure that you are using at least a universal Mercon/Dexron ATF and not ATF-6 as its too thin. Amsoil Torque-Drive or Casterol Transynd works best. Only half way up on the crosshatch.
