Great forum here. I have had my eye on the Vue for quite some time now, this forum definitely helps make the descision easier.
But first things first. I need a little help here. My future father in-laws 2000 sw2 developed a weird alarm problem the other night. The alarm would not disarm at all. No matter what we tried. He was stuck in the middle of no where at 1:00 am in the morning. So we called road side assisance, they said to call back at 6:00 am to have it towed directly to the dealer since the vehicle was safely off the road. Oh...they also instructed us to perform all the alarm tasks to disarm it, to no success. We were not satisfied with that so we called a independent tow company. As soon as the tow operator came, he sat in the car for 30 seconds, fiddle around with the key fob and ignition and the car started. He said he had reset the alarm, but would refuse to tell us how he did it, and charged us $92 for the service. The problem hasn't reoccured since. So, here is the question, does anyone know how to reset the saturn securty system in this vehicle? Just in case it happens again. Thanks for any help. |

I beleive that the Saturn security system disables the ignition for 30 minutes on that car. The independent guy probably just happened to start the car after the ignition had been enabled, and just claimed that he reset it.

Well, we tried waiting for the 30 minutes thing...twice. Once when we did it, then again with road side assistance on the phone. We were there for 2.5 hours. When the Tow operator came and pressed a sequence of buttons on the key Fob the Horn sounded off a few "honks", not sure how many and in what order, was too tired to pay attention. Keep in mind neither us nor road side assistance made the honk sound off in any sequence.
So, I'm still pretty certain he did something. |

Sounds like he "synched" the fob. Standing next to the car, hold down both the lock and unlock buttons until the car responds with some quick honks.
The fob generates a different code every time it's used, and the car follows that sequence. If the car gets a code that's out of sequence, it checks ahead a few in the sequence (in case the fob buttons were pressed while away from the car). If it still doesn't get a match, it refuses to open. This can happen if the fob button was pressed too many times while away from the car (getting bumped while in a pocket or purse can do this), or if the battery has been out too long. Holding down the buttons tells the car you're restarting the sequence. And yes, this will only work with a car coded to your fob -- you can't use it to synch the fob to another car and open it. |

Thanks Alanhvue.
I will try that the next time it happens. You may be right on this. In fact I will try to force the error, by pressing the fob buttons while far away from the vehicle, next week and see if this works. I hope you are right I need some sleep, he tends to call me with all sorts of problems. Fixing this one lessens the chances of me losing zzzz's. |

Another good reason reinforcing my decision to never own a vehicle with the auto lock/alarm/rke gadget.

I very much agree with you: my SW2 has ABS/TC and an upgraded radio (cassette), but manual locks and windows (since I am 6' 5" I can reach all the manual controls easily :-). It is a concern of mine that it is getting nearly impossible to buy even an entry level car without a lot of power accessories. This is exactly the kind of stuff that causes expensive repairs after 8-10 years and/or 80-100K miles. A friend of mine almost went bankrupt replacing these electric motors in his Saab, which had an engine that should have been good for another 100K miles - at least, but he finally gave up on it. :-( Jim |

Glad someone thinks like I do.
Uncle paid $1000 at 4 x $250 to change the garbage electric windows on his Taurus. Who needs crap like this in a car? |
