Key sticks in the lock

My wife's 2004 Ion is experiencing an intermittant problem with the key sticking in the lock. Periodically but not all the time, when we reach our destination, we can't remove the key from the lock. We can turn off the engine but the key will not turn to the position needed to remove it. We have to turn the key to the start position and back several times and eventually you will hear what sounds like a solonoid activating and then you can remove the key. What do I need to do to fix this and how difficult is it to fix on my own.

John,

It sounds like the ignition switch in your wife's car is failing. Use the search feature on this board to read other posts, many other posts, about how others solved this common Ion problem, including me. It happened to me last July - I couldn't turn the car off or remove the key. The car had to be towed on a flatbed truck to the retailer, where the the ignition cylinder was replaced and the new security system, Passlock, had to be "relearned" by the new cylinder so I could drive the car.
