Default Cannot Get Shift Cable Clips Back On

Good afternoon,

I have a slight emergency I need help with. I replaced the shift cable on my 1997 Saturn SL with a replacement (Pioneer CA-1201); however, I cannot get the large clips that mount the cable to the transaxle back into place.

Is there some (any?) advice anyone can give me as to how this is done?

Tab pints to the left and you have to push the cable housing tight against the trans housing and the side the clip enters first, top, should be very slightly tipped down by lifting up on the back of that part of the housing. Once started they go right in but make absolutely sure the curved part of the clip is fully seated in the housing groove.

They're different clips, they won't work if you put them in the wrong spots.

The 2 large clips are identical and the 2 small clips are identical but they will not swap places.

Best advice I can give is to be sure that the ends are tight against the transaxle. The clip will hold it in place, but it will not pull it into place.

I got mine from Advance Auto (Dorner) and the first one was an older design that would not work. The 'neck' between the end of the cable and the stick shift was not stiff enough and would bend when shifting. Dorner was good enough to send the new improved design directly upon proof of purchase of the other one. Hope Pioneer did their homework better than Dorner the first time around.
