Wrench 2000 SL2 transmission clunk

I have a 2000 saturn SL2 that I had a transmission put in about 10 months ago. lately here it's been making a thud or clunk when I put it in reverse. It only happens when I put it in reverse. I've had the engine and transmission mounts checked and they are all fine so what could be causing this and how do I fix it?

One of the automatic transmission guys or gals will be along shortly. Sounds like a loose ISN (input shaft nut) or a reverse slam. Search those terms on the forum while you wait for someone more helpful.

Not really an automatic guy but I've read enough to know what's going on. The start of "reverse slam" is caused by sludge in the passages of the valve body caused by poor maintenance. The passages for reverse are where it first shows. The transmission fluid and filter must be changed at the appropriate intervals. If you leave it too long then the input shaft nut loses torque and starts to back off. Eventually you start losing other gears; if a recall correctly second is the next to go and that is caused by the input shaft nut issue.

If you catch it early you can perform the "Wolfman reverse slam cure" procedure. Wolfman was a Saturn technician and member of this forum. Read this post for more information.....Reverse "Slam" Cure in Saturn Autotransaxles.

If you left it too long then your into replacing the valve body and re-torqueing the input shaft nut. Sometimes you can get by with just the valve body. The valve body with the Sonnax upgrade is the preferred one. The are a couple of suppliers. Ken Partin Transmissions is one that comes to mind. He has a website and sells on eBay. He is very helpful and easy to work with from what other forum members have said. Here's the procedure to replace the valve body >> Valve Body Replacement

Here's the attachment that Chazberry created on replacing the input shaft nut. Click on it and it will download a pdf document >>ISN Tips

I had this happen on my other Saturn. Do not wait jump on it now. Get
a trans and valve body pressure flush if you wait too long then you gotta
swap valve body. You need to get all the gunk outta there.

you know the slam is trans issue if it takes more than a few seconds for reverse to engage.

you know it is an input shaft nut only issue if the trans engaged quickly but you still get the slam.

If you wait too long to fix the trans the constant slams will loosen the input
shaft nut and then you gotta fix both.
