2006 ION-2 Sedan
Default Adding Aftermarket Remote Keyless Entry

I have a new 2006 Ion 2 Sedan with electric locks, manual transmisison, and crank windows. I intend to install a do-it-yourself Remote Keyless Entry kit. I was wondering if anyone else has done this and can recommend a brand, that worked well, or one to avoid. I installed a remote starter on a '91 New Yorker that also locked/unlocked doors and popped the truck. It also flashed the parking lights to confirm button pushed.

Unit needs to:
lock/unlock doors with separate buttons
pop truck
not mess up existing hardware
not cause airbag to deploy while probing wires.

It would be nice if:
it flashed the parking lights to confirm button pushed
it honked the horn to confirm doors locked
it flashed and honked for "car finder"

I don't need an ignition blocker or alarm or remote start ability as this will just take longer to install.

Thanks,

I'm currently investigating keyless entry for an 06 Quad Coupe 2. I've discovered you can add a new Body Control Module that will give you the keyless entry. This will not give you remote start or an alarm, but will give you the keyless entry and truck release. Once the BCM is installed, it must be programmed with your VIN by the dealer.

I'd rather get something I can do myself. There are kits available that cost $50 or less that leave all of the existing electronics intact. They come with key fobs and a separate receiver unit that you tap directly into the appropriate existing wires (power/ground/lock/unlock/truck/parking lights/horn, etc.)

I was looking at doing that one myself. How hard was it to do, and how long did it take you to install it?

Ok, but I have a manual transmission, so I don't want to have to go through the trouble of adding a remote starter. I'm looking for something with keyless entry and trunk, and possibly car finder (honk horn/flash lights).

Did you install it yourself? Was it clear which wires to avoid probing (airbag)? Did you use a test probe, or digital meter?

Thanks,

For those interested, there is a CD covering both Subaru and Saturn wiring up to 2006 (although I only say the Ion up to 05) on Ebay for something like $13.00.

Here is the link

That's a cool site. Thanks for the link.

The remote starter I installed in the old '91 New Yorker was from Bulldog. That was about 4 years ago, so I don't remember everything, but I pretty much followed the instructions one step at a time.

My biggest fear is I'll probe the wrong wire and cause the airbag to deploy. Any advise on how to avoid making that happen?

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the 2006 Ion? Is it the same as the 2005?

Thanks,

Just get the non remote starter version. Its cheaper. Install is pretty straight forward if you know how to wire.

Can you recommend a brand/model and where to buy?

Thanks,

I got the 2005 wiring information from Bulldog Security online. Can anyone tell me if anything has changed for 2006?

Thanks,

Ok, I'm trying to take off the lower dash below the steering wheel. I've found the two hex-screws at each lower corner, but that's not all there is holding it on. Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to take of the dash?

Thanks,
