Default vin egine code to original code how to check?

hi, i am not sure where to post this question as it is not really ?, i was working on my car and my friend commented that i might have a newer engine in my car , how can you check to see if it is original engine to vehicle? trying to find block number but, i am not very good at this yet...any info thanks...
