2002 VUE 3.0L
1997 SC2
Default Codes PO171 & 174

Hello All

SEL was set on my '02, 3.0L AWD Vue with 75,000 miles on the clock and the codes pulled from it was PO171 & PO 174. Possible causes are vacuum leaks, fuel pressure low, bad fuel, ECT, and MAF sensors according to FSM. I did an extensive search on this forum and found that there is a TSB # 02-06-01-016A which I googled and printed out. My Vue fall within the VIN number catagory as stated in TSB. But I'm lost about the vacuum chamber spring kit & installation, for instance, how many springs are there, how are they installed, and what exactly are their function? Can anybody enlighten me on this? The diagram in the TSB is kind of vague. Somebody on this forum quoted $25 for this spring kit from the Saturn dealer. I called a couple dealers and they quoted $47 and $51. Did anybody buy the spring kit from another source beside Saturn dealers?
Meanwhile, I cleared the codes with my scanner, filled the gas tank, and driven at least 40 miles without the codes coming back on(?). I'm hoping that maybe it was bad gas! I'll let you know if it does come back.
Thanks in advance for any input!

Jerry

Jerry ... I don't have a 3.0 and actually can't find much in service manual about intake manifold springs.

I understand there are flapper valves in each intake runner but they could be strictly diaphragm controlled with no spring assist.

There's also a back-fire valve in the intake which has a spring and I've attached information for this device - I suspect if this critter fails you'll have more problems than P0171 / 174.

Finally, do you have a vacuum gage? If so, and vacuum level is good (20-22) inches) you can eliminate vacuum as a contributor for these DTC's and concentrate on other likely suspects.

If vacuum is low, or fluctuating a great deal, I use hemostats to sequentially squeeze off various hoses and tubes to see if I can locate the culprit (pcv, hvac, egr, etc).

To be honest, the best hope is for the really bright 3.0 folks to log on and straighten this mess out.

Far2grumpy,

Thanks for your fast responce and suggestion. My Vue start, idle and run normally without any backfiring, just that PO171 &174 codes came on, was cleared, and didn't come back on after 45 miles so far. I'm hoping anybody who had this problem (codes) and installed vacuum chamber springs, P/N 93175463 as per TSB# 02-06-01-016A and give me more details.

Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry ... I didn't mean to infer you had backfire ... the design of that particular valve apparently has a history of permitting some amount of air to be inhaled into the intake chamber.

Our old friends P0171 and 174 supposedly indicate the mixture is too lean (but we know the fuel quantity can be "spot-on" with the code actually being caused by too much air in the mix).

I'm baffled by those springs ... I checked on-line files at our local library and there's no mention of them.

I've read the service bulletin multiple times and can't figure out how the springs would be added to reduce likelihood of vacuum leak in the vacuum chamber. Is this going to remain one of life's little mysteries?

JerryH ... I noted ssicarman's post after posting the previous response ... I have the SB but don't see data for number or location of springs.

Please let us know if the codes revisit ... this is very interesting, and not very funny!

There are two springs. They are obvious when you get the cover off.

Thanks for the infos!

Glad I'm not alone far2grumpy, after reading and looking at the pictures many times and still can't figure it out. Ssicarman, you say only two springs! And the Saturn dealer want about $ 50 for this kit! So far the codes haven't come back (yet). I hoping it was bad gas but I'm not that lucky. I suspect it has very low vacuum leak and it a matter of time before the codes come back, if it does i certainly let you know!

Thanks again,
Jerry
