Hi all,
I have a SL 1999 SOHC with no PS. the engine is getting pretty tired 165k miles, this morning it was pouring black stuff out the tail pipe. Ive never seen it do that before. will a 2000-2002 SOHC engine directly swap in? also what years PS are compatible for this car. I'd like to put in Power Steering while I'm in there replacing the engine. What all components do I need so setup a PS system in this car since it doens't currently have power steering. thank you for your help. I love this forum.. wish saturns didn't get dropped by GM. ![]() |

It might need a new ect sensor if it is running rich causing black smoke.

no smoke, liquid... it was very water based but black as I've never seen.
the ECT sensor is fairly new, roughly 2k miles. I've noticed this last oil change, it seems to be going through oil at a much faster rate and seems to be running weaker. but not richer. thanks |

The engine should swap just fine. Use the sensors off of your 99 though as you know that they function with your PCM.
You would need the power steering pump, hoses and steering rack. Do not buy a pump that has the EVO option as you can not take advantage of it without a lot of work/expense. It would just be an extra part. |

If there is an electrical connector on the PS pump its EVO. Very few SL-1 have EVO, almost none.

Thank you, I'll keep an eye out to make sure I don't get a pump setup with the electrical clip on it.
