2002 SL
Default 02 Saturn SL misfire at idle only

First I would like to thank everyone that has helped me in the past with my tech issues.

I am currently having an issue with the engine misfiring at idle.

I purchased this vehicle brand new back in 2002.

It currently has 51,000 original miles on it. (I know I don't drive the thing )

Recent history - back in April 2016 I finally replaced the original spark plug wires.

I changed the plug wires and replaced the spark plugs as well (autolite)

Car ran beautifully til' one day I noticed it was misfiring when I came to a complete stop. It was misfiring pretty violently so I went back to the store and brought back the wires. I install the new wires and it kept on misfiring but not as violently. I then replaced the Autolite spark plugs and installed AC Delco spark plugs. Misfiring still happens but not as violently.

A friend then mentioned it could be bad gas /water in the gas....so I dumped a bottle of fuel injection cleaner and HEET additive (to remove possible water) and filled it with fresh gas. Ran around and placed quite an enormous amount of miles on my car this weekend. The car runs like a bear while driving and I feel no hesitation, bucking or kicking when on the highway or city driving. Once I come to a stop then it acts up and starts misfiring.

Is there something else that would be causing my engine to misfire under idle?

I know it is time to replace the fuel filter...maybe I should start there?

What am I missing or overlooking? I want to hang onto this car for at least another 10 years

Thank you for any help or wisdom you can share with me.

Take a can of carb or brake cleaner and spray it around the number 1 intake port where it meets the cylinder head. If the engine speeds up, the intake gasket is bad.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will give that a try tomorrow.

bluesl2 you were right on. Brake cleaner aimed at the # 1 intake port didn't rev my engine up however it almost choked my car into stalling. Thanks for your assistance.

There is a good write up on gasket replacement in the "How To" section here. It is a 3 - 4 hour job and not too difficult. Almost all of us 3rd gen SOHC owners have done the gasket replacement at some point, myself included.

Poor idle performance can be a dirty egr. If you clean it up, it may ladle fine.

Try cleaning your throttle body...

You will need some 6 point metric sockets, FEL-PRO Part # 61177 gasket, T20, and T25 screwdrivers, and some carb cleaner...

Richpin video...

Also plain copper NGK plugs work best, I am running the V-Powers, in one heat range colder than normal...
For the SOHC, that would be BKR5E-11...

NGK BKR6E-11 spark plugs

After spraying brake cleaner near the #1 intake port and having the car "choke" on me, (drop in rpm and nearly stall out) I do not believe this situation involves a dirty throttle or EGR. Stay tuned....
