Hi all I have been a background member for quite sometime but have read quite a bit of the threads and gotten some awesome info
![]() My 1999 SL1 popped the head about 8 months ago ![]() ![]() Here is my issue, I noticed that I was getting a misfire during idle, followed by code p0130,p1133, and an intermittent p0303. I drive on the highway for about 7 to 10 miles and the CEL comes on, with my generic code reader I can reset and it will not come on for the duration of my commute(120 miles) unless I stop and restart the car? I replaced the o2 sensor with the denso, plugs, wires,ECTS, done the compression check with 185 to 190 across all four cylinders Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! |

1-Mileage on the engine?
2-What caused the cylinder head to "pop"? 3-What was repaired? 4-Any maintenance done? Plugs? Ignition system (icm and coils) cleaned or replaced? 5-Fuel pressure checked? What pressure? 6-Fuel filter replaced (>100k miles)? 7-Restricted exhaust? Partially clogged catalytic converter? Loose 'cat guts'? P0130 and P1133 are O2 sensor issues. The first for low signal output, the second for slow switching rate.

Yes and no. Map sensor faults will cause an error code so its guessing here.
With good compression and an old engine resurrected from a faulty cylinder head, the last thing anyone looks at is the fuel pump and pressure. Nothing lasts forever and fuel pumps can't be expected to last 175k miles. Put on a fuel pressure gauge to see what's there. 40-55psi is expected. Check pump ground by the brake light wiring; any ground connections with corrosion have killed pumps that were thought to be faulty when ground was the issue. Ignition control module and coils should be removed and cleaned of corrosion and painted. Dielectric grease on the coil boots allows corrosion protection and ease of removal. No valid tests exists for them. Junk yard ignition parts are cheaper and work just as well as new expensive ones.

I removed the ICM and the coil packs, which look pretty clean , I checked them with DVM(high quality recently calibrated) and got about 7.5k on both on secondary and 770/740 ohms on the primary. Not sure if those indicate anything, I looked in the Haynes book and secondary is outside of spec
![]() I'll check the grounds tomorrow and fuel pressure tomorrow |

***UPDATE***
Hey all, I noticed that I never posted what my final issue was, since I found it about 3 weeks ago now. It was a clogged #3 injector, so check your injectors if you experiencing a intermittent misfire, mine finally stopped working all together and that helped with the troubleshooting. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong ![]() I ordered a reman injector from rock auto(yes only 1, due to funds issues) which didn't work, long story short after 2 bad "remanufactured" injectors, I was able to clean my self at home with my square wave generator and some good you tube videos |

Had P0303 on my 1999 SL SOHC manual 482,803 Km (300,000 miles).
Replaced, ignition modules, spark plugs, spark plug wires, used seafoam, and finally the PCV valve and the code turned off. Did not do the compression test (was about to). Thank you for all the tips, it saved me mucho dinero! |
