Recently purchased a 1994 SL2 for my daughters first car. I changed the ECTS, plugs, wires, coolant, oil, trans fluid, OEM trans filter, and cleaned the coil pack connections. All with the help and how to's in this forum. Today the #4 ignition fuse blew and the car died. This was after teaching how to parallel park ( whole other story.) Replaced the fuse drove about 100' and died again. One extra fuse and I made it home but the service engine light came on. I'm stumped.

Very telling....
Try removing the FAN relay in the underhood fuse box, and seeing if the problem repeats. (NOTE: DO NOT LEAVE IT THAT WAY LONG TERM! The car will eventually OVERHEAT and possibly cause engine damage.) If it DOES: Put it back in, thats not it. If it DOES NOT: Swap the relay for one of the others in the fuse box and see it it repeats: If it DOES: Fault is in the RADIATOR FAN or the wiring going to it If it DOES NOT: Replace the fan relay with a new one. If this does not solve the problem, repost.

I pulled the relay and the ses came back on. I purchased all the 30A fuses around me. No more until they re-order. The fan motor does turn on when the engine is hot. I'm not a mechanic or really that good on cars but I like to try.

What I am trying to establish is if the fuse blows at the moment, or soon after, the radiator fan comes on.

This (in combination with your other symptoms) suggests that fan power (POS) is either shorted to ground, or the fan motor itself is shorted internally. (When the fan relay trips and tries to send power to the fan, it finds the short which blows the power supply (30 Amp) fuse for the fan (among other things...as you have discovered)
UNPLUG the FAN (leave all fuses and relays in place) and see if the fuse still blows (be careful not to let the car overheat) The fan motor itself is replaceable (just the motor) and is not too difficult or expensive to do. NOTE: Unless you are running the A/C or the car is stationary for several minutes (stuck in traffic, stop and go etc..) the fan is NOT NEEDED. (It does not run when the car is being driven down the road 85% of the time)

Jumped the relay per video by richpin06. Fan did not start- fuse did not blow. Will get a new fan motor.
Thanks |
