2001 SL2
Default 2001 SL2 TAAT Shift Points

I'm new to the Saturn family and have read that the TAAT locks up the Torque Converter after the 2nd gear is engaged. Can anyone confirm that the following is a "normal" shift sequence for this car?

During normal, warm engine conditions, smooth acceleration from stop to 50 mph,

1st gear, engine idle at 800 rpm, as I accelerate rpm rise to 2500 rpm(15 mph)
2nd gear engages and rpm drop by 200 rpm to 2300 rpm
Under smooth acceleration, rpm rise to 2500 rpm and suddenly drop to 2200 rpm. Is this the torque convertor lock-up?
Under continued smooth acceleration, rpm rise again to 2800 rpm (31 mph)
3rd gear engages, rpm drop to 1900 rpm
Under continued smooth acceleration, rpm rise to 2600-2700 rpm (44 mph)
4th gear engages, rpm rise to about 2000 rpm (50 mph)

I don't have any of the reverse "slam" or 2nd gear slippage issues reported unless the post 2nd gear drop in rpm is slip and not torque converter lockup.

Your missing some rpm drops Under smooth acceleration the blend in and happen almost immediately after the shift.

Before each shift after second gear, the torque converter unlocks. It then relocks once in the next gear. Under semi hard load you'll hear each shift then each lock up point. This is why some people are not used to the s-series tranny and feel its acting weird.

If you really slam the accelerator, the converter will unlock while staying in gear instead of downshifting. It the load is to great, it will then downshift.

Thank you for the confirmation of normal shift sequences and the enhanced explanation of additional pre-shift unlocking of the torque converter. I will try harder accelerations to see if I can feel this happening.

Thanks again

So there is no question that little drop in rpms is normal on automatics before the third gear shift? does this feel kinda like the transmission has a hesitation before it shifts?

oh noooo!!

Yes most trannies don't do this. They lock up in 3rd or only 4th. But the s-series is different

I also was thinking for sure my TAAT was slipping during the 3rd gear shift. Glad to hear its "normal" for the S-series. Sorry about all the work you did swapping out the transmission. A big thanks again to all for the helpful insight and information.
