Wrench Complex sound system question: PAL+AUX+Wireless headphones ?

Hi folks,

I'm currently connecting my iPod to the AUX but would like the kids to be able to listen to their DVD player through the wireless headphones at the back (07 XE with Advanced Audio package). The DVD would have to be connected in the AUX and I would not be able to listen to my iPod at the same time (only radio or CDs)

Does anyone know if installing the PAL system frees up the AUX or if an iPod connected through the PAL still occupies the AUX slot. If it frees up the AUX, I'll have the PAL installed.

Thanks

Found my own answer !

In case anyone wonders, the PAL operates through the XM band, thus leaving the AUX free for other things.

DVDs for the kids at the back, through wireless headphones, and iPod, almost fully integrated into the radio controls, for the folks in front ! This is real luxury ! I wonder how many cars offer this ?

Sounds like a great set-up! Glad to hear you are enjoying it!

How is the PAL working out for you? This is something I'd like to get.

A PAL is a Personal Audio Link. It allows you to connect an iPod to the radio through an iPod cable in the glove box. You can then control some of the functions of your iPod though the radio control and (maybe) through the steering wheel controls. It also displays your iPod information on the radio screen. It only works in XM compatible radios. It's been available for a few years and Sky owners have reported a few problems (ie non-functional), but I've seen nothing here.

You can find the schematics for this on a recent tread and links to the GM site on an older tread:

I got very interested when I saw the post. Both Saturn dealers (Temecula, Irvine) could not locate it even whrn I provided part number, and told them it may be a Malibu part. In any event, I talked to Crutchfield and am always amazed at their knowledge levels. Anyway, I own a 2008 Aura XE w/upgraded stereo. Here's the link to crutchfield:

It's actually more than GM's version, and you have to buy the $19.99 adapter. Take a look.

We must have the PAL in our's as it came with wireless headsets and the granddaughter listens to Disney on XM while we listen to country up front. It does have a seperate radio for the back seat.

The 08 Aura XR comes with the 6 CD in dash radio which comes with the rear radio and wireless headphones which allows back seat passengers to listen to a SEPERATE audio source than the front seat occupants. I don't know what would happen if you plugged a Y connector with two inputs into the Aux radio input with two seperate sound sources running into it. My guess is that the radio will not play both but rather select one over the other - randomly perhaps? PAL is an accessory that must be purchased seperately and installed and is specifically intended to operate an iPod with a docking connector and plays through the XM band.

Your guess is exactly right. I have this very setup and was told by the tech crew at the dealer they can not do it. Saturn wouldnt even give them the codes for the radio because its not authorized.
