2004 VUE Red Line
Default Custom Redline Hitch

Does anyone have the contact info for the guy in Michigan making the custom Vue Redline hitch? I have an '04 and want to pull a 1,000 lb single place PWC trailer.

Well, thanks to the ideas of others here, this is how my hitch turned out. I went to a local welding shop and told him to order the stock Vue hitch, lop off the receiver, and weld another below it. He even boxed in the old receiver and made the turned-up insert. The hitch is about 2" behind the rear valance, so it's not so visible. I'm very happy with the results.

Excellent! The 2nd photo is surprisingly close to what my (also) "custom" made hitch looks like. I really like the curved neck bit that they made for you. If you're just towing a waverunner, I'm sure you'll be fine with that setup.

I'd like to get an adapter similar to what you've done, but instead of actually having the hitch platform and ball on the end, I'd like to have another class 3 receiver. Reason being is I have a cargo platform that plugs into the hitch, and I'd like to "lift" it up to level with the rear bumper, to keep it from dragging on the ground so much. I'm sure some hitch shop could weld me up something in 30 minutes from an 18" adapter tube or something, I just haven't looked hard enough to find a shop to do it. I'm such a slackass.

Good job man, looks great! Have fun, your setup looks very sharp.

Thanks, Dante! I have to give you the credit for the idea, though.

This all started because of gas prices. I usually tow my Waverunner 90 miles round trip with my 3/4 ton Suburban when I head to the Mississippi River. It only gets 10 MPG and requires 92 octane due to a custom tune. That's over $30 in gas. Towing the Waverunner with the Vue RL will almost cut that in half.

I'm not exactly sure about the rise and can't measure it right now. But, 4-1/2" to 5" sounds right. I just told the welder that I wanted the top of the ball at 19" off the ground.

Dante and redlineit, check out this site. They have what you're looking for.

You're right... either of those "Drop Receivers" would work for me, upside down of course... but HOLY HELL!!! $100 to $150 was way more than I was wanting to pay for something like that. I was expecting more like $50. I'm going to have to shop around a bit.

Did you just put on the hitch and not worry about it?

Yea, but they're really shiny! It would be cheaper to get one made like I did.

If you do a search on towing, you'll find that several people are towing with their RL's. Some are towing 2,500 lbs or more! I'd keep it to 1500 lbs or less, though. My Waverunner on the trailer with full fuel jugs weighs about 1,000 lbs.

As long as you're conservative with how much weight you pull and how you pull it, the RL can do light loads just fine. I wouldn't go pull a double axle 15' trailer cross the country, but a pop-up or waverunner or john boat or something, no problemo.

We recently returned from our annual visit to my in-law's in east-central Michigan. I towed the Waverunner 1450 miles round-trip and all went well. I only saw about 19 MPG running in "I" mode on the transmission, though.
