2006 ION-3 Quad Coupe
Default Maybe you can tell if I need new tires...

My mom's been ranting and raving about me needing a new set. I've put about 30k on these. They're Runway Enduros...I'd never heard of it (they came new on the car). I don't know how to do that penny trick with the tread pattern that I have. Anyways, she's convinced that it's time for them to go. If they do need replacing, I'm looking at either a set of Hankook Ventus or Goodyear Eagle RS's.

A "real" Tire Depth Gauge (instead of using a Quarter or Penny) can be very inexpensive. (Got my for like $1.50 or something)

When you get down to the 2/32nds Wear Bars... it's time to swap out.\

Probably don't show Mom this video (or maybe do... she might chip in a few extra bucks for you to swap out the tires immediately at additional cost.)

What Honest Abe Doesn't Tell You About Minimum Tread Depths

Until you've got better tires... increase your Following Distance and drive more cautiously/defensively.

yeah they are getting close to the legal limit, plus they are aged-looking.
You can use a penny with lincoln's head in the tread for a quick test.

While Zosozeppelin did mention having some issues testing using a coin on those tires...

Using Coins to check Tread.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=51

Using a Tread Tire Guage.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...jsp?techid=148

Just for discussion it'd be nice to know more about the Enduros. Don't think those were Factory... Might be a good idea to confirm they are the proper size/type (All Seasons right?) for the vehicle. (Installed on the Original Stock Wheels?)

Maybe "restore" the vehicle to using a Factory Recommended size if the Runway Enduros happened to be a "what ever fits" swap/special.

Yeah, these weren't factory. I bought the car used and these were slapped on by a Saturn dealership that had just been terminated by GM (right before the phase out all together). They're on factory wheels. Lemme tell you, these tires are LOUD. I like the tread pattern, though. It's good for wet weather. I've never known this car without these tires, so I can only assume that once I swap a good brand on that I've actually heard of, it'll ride a lot better than before. They look like they're dry rotting to me.

Oh yeah, and she's buying the new set. She insists that I keep full coverage on the car which every six months I spend 1k for it. So, needless to say, being a full time student and part time waitress, it's difficult for me to be able to run out and buy a set. If she'd only cut my insurance back...

Well then do some research on tirerack.com see which tires are going to best meet your performance/price requirements and see who/where you might get the best deal for the tires/install.

When I bought my AVID ENVigor's around May... I found a low price online and had Ford Service Price Match (plus, at the time, a $100 Ford Rebate) for those tires. Win-Win.

You might be surprised the "best" tires for your needs might not have to be the most expensive "Name Brand you've heard of".

Score one for the OP's mother. Definitely time for a new set. Judging from the thumbnail photo provided, the existing tread is very close to alignment with the 'wear' bar.

I figured they'd at least be good for a little longer. This set is only 2 1/2 years old. It all comes down to quality, I suppose. My mom got a Hankook Ventus set installed on her car and I like how they ride so far, so I think that's what I'll go with. They're cheaper than the Goodyear Eagles I was looking at at Pepboys, but they're more expensive at Sears than the Goodyears .

Anyway, she has a 2006 Toyota Avalon that rides pretty well to begin with. She had a set of Mastercrafts on there before, and her Hankooks are just waay above what she had. I noticed a huge difference.

Don't expect identical handling between vehicles. But, probably not a bad thing when researching to compare your available options, using the ratings of her tires as a baseline.

Oh I know. Her car is a much smoother ride compared to an Ion to begin with, but even then you could tell a difference with hers. I'm excited to see how my car will ride. I'll probably go ahead and get the fuel system flushed again soon too. That made a difference in the idle. It'd feel like a brand new car!

Zeppelin-I'm not sure what the other posters are seeing (and no disrespect intended to them), but those tires have a ton of life left in them. You are nowhere near the wear bars, except on the outer edge, and the slight cracking is not indicative of dry-rot. Especially in Louisiana, where you don't have snow to worry about (only heavy rain, but if it's a hurricaine stay home you should not have traction problems. Under normal driving I'd say you have a good 2 years or more left on those babies, although checking your alignment and inflation pressures would be a good idea.

this is soo much more complicated than most people can begin to realize. for example, the hankooks and goodyears that come stock on our cars are useless on our light weight cars, but work perfectly fine on other, heavier cars with skinnier tires relative to weight. tread pattern and compound effect overall grip and noise, sidewall stiffness/thickness effect ride and handling quality. then you have how much sidewall there is in relation to stiffness/thickness of the sidewall, how wide the tire is compared to weight per tire, and the belt/bead thickness, material, pattern, ect...

guaranteed the same tire will not be similar the same on a 2800LB car as it would be on a 3600LB car.

the same spec tire on your car will be stiffer riding, and less grippy (by quite a bit), at the very least.

Regardless, they'd probably still be an upgrade from Runways.

What tires to you recommend for it? I don't think my mom is going to go for BF Goodwrench or anything like that.

These are what I was looking at:

http://www.pepboys.com/tires/compare...9822LDOHC/147/

I like the Hankooks because they have a longer warranty and they're eligible for rebates. Those aren't the Optimos that came on our cars. I think this is supposed to be one of their better tires.

I'll disagree that those tires don't need upgrading. Great if you don't need 6/32nds for Snow/Ice but if you get out a Quarter and have 4/32nds or less you'll have poor Wet traction.

Are they worth the price difference? I don't know about where you live, but here even from a Goodyear tire place it's still a $50 a tire difference from the other Eagle set and the Ventuses (what ever the plural for that is...)
