Default Reverse Slam

I have done a search, sorted through a wall of text that came up with EGR valve, IAC Valve and several threads talking about the valve body replacment.

I have an '02 SL2 and I really don't want to put out $1500 at Saturn to have this replaced and from what it sounds like, it would be pretty easy for me to replace (I've worked on Powerstroke Diesels, my '85 Diesel Chevy LT1s, LS1s etc etc) but can't seem to find the instructions on how this is done. I've checked e-bay and at a total loss on what I'm looking for. Most on ebay show as '94-95 but none for an '02 model. Is the tranny the same or have there been any changes that one from a '95 wouldn't work. It just happened one day and hopefully we stopped driving the car before it worked the nut off the input shaft (wife only drove it for like 30 miles after it started clunking, but it catches a mean 2nd and 3rd gear )

Any help on this would be apprieciated in large quantities.

This is most certainly the Input Shaft Nut.

Actually it probably isn't. If he caught it early enough all he needs to do is replace the valve body. It sounds like the input shaft nut is still torqued since there's no slippage.

Get a valve body from any 1992+ S-series car, the valve bodies have changed from then till the '02.

I have a valve body that I'm selling currently on eBay that I remanufactured. Comes with a 14 day warranty from myself. If your interested let me know.

Edit: Actually you might have caught it even earlier enough to not do anything except a simply procedure.

If that doesn't work then I would move onto the valve body.

Also, would it be worth trying to get a shop manual for doing this? I've found a few for just '96-'99 Automatic Transaxle, would it be the same as my '02 model?

To change the valve body? It's really not needed, it's only a few simple steps. And what have you found for a '96-'99 A/T, a valve body? If so then yes a valve body from any year between 1992 and up to and including 2002 works.

The car was downshifting from 3rd to second real hard, and the upshifts are extremely hard (like the car has a shift kit in it) on top of it slamming into reverse like it is, I think I'm going to go ahead with the valve body since it seems to be the easiest thing to do.

Oh, I was referring to a Saturn manual for the '96-'99 model Automatic Transaxles.

Mine slams only from reverse to drive. What happens if I just leave it alone?

It will get worse and may loosen the input shaft nut.

I came here because of reverse slam. Tried the fix by Wolfman in the How-To Library. Fixed the problem immediately. Over 50,000 miles and problem has not returned. I recommend the Mobil 1 Dex III after it is fixed to keep the valve body clean. It has worked for me, plus 30,000 mile fluid and filter changes.

Well, got a rebuilt valvebody from Transtar (the VBX rebuilt unit) and 2.5 hours later, car is shifting like a dream and no more slamming into reverse.

Thanks for all the help and info that I got on this board regarding the problem was awesome.
