Can I ask why are you wantin' a '00-'02 engine in a '98? They were not a better desing, and they are bogged down with an AIR pump. The tranny will work no problem, but the PCM is a different story, I'm quite certain it won't. Along with that, the head is a different design and the intake and exahust manifolds need to be carried over with the newer engine. I think those are the major issues for you. Low Saturn is the expert in...well just about everything mechanical about hese cars, and especially engine sawps.

If it's just a rod, you could find a bottom end, since pretty much all of the changes were to the head after 1999. That's if you trust your head. Maybe a newer bottom end and a mild rework of the head? Might be easier than swapping the whole thing, depending how good you are around motors.

Tranny should work no problem. '98-2002 are all the same trannies. PCM...i think that will work also. the manifolds switched in '99 so you can use your '98 manifolds. and you will have to use your '98 fuel rail. other than that, it really should be plug and play

This is what I did. I installed a 2002 block into my 1997 SC2. Mine had spun a bearing. The 2002 block was from a car with an auto transmission. The head, timing set, transmission and all bolt ons were 1997. I wanted the newer block because I had read here on SaturnFans that the ring design was better, used less oil, and the crankshaft was somehow stronger.

For the PCM i suggest keeping the '98 PCM. Keep the 5spd tranny and just drop the new engine in. more then anough member here have done engine swaps. LowSaturn is the swap master haha ![]()

There shouldn't be any driveability problems, it's just emissions control. Are you sure your SES light works? Does it light up at start up? I didn't know it was possible to run without it, if your SES light works, I wonder how they got around the AIR pump. Maybe an older PCM?
