Default 09 Redline (Deal or No Deal)

First off I'd like to say hello to everyone here. This is my first post but I have been going through the forums and reading through the threads.

I currently own a Mazda 3s (DD) & a Nissan 350z. I am considering trading in the mazda for a 09 Redline. I know Saturn is going out of business, the vue line is no longer & resale value are big issues. With that in mind, I have a question for the community...

MSRP: $34,214 for a 09 Redline (Black) FWD
Black Leather Trim, Red Line
Discount Option Package
Black Onyx
Remote Start
Sunroof
Emissions, Federal
Red Line Package
Manual Shift for Automatic Transmission Control
Engine Gas, 3.6L V6
Automatic Transmission
Processing Option
Processing Option
Interior Trim Pricing Code
Stock Order
AM/FM CD Navigation Radio
Saturn Advanced Audio System
Wireless Interface, Short Range, Voice Recognition
Exterior Roof Rail
Front License Plate Bracket
Preferred Package
Convenience Package
TOTAL OPTIONS: $3,885.00

After Rebates/Discounts... They are offering it to me at $24,600

It is new but a demo (never titled) with 2400 miles.

Q: Is this a deal too good to pass even with the saturn/vue/resale issues?

I know its tempting, but I would pass.
I would look at a new GMC Terrain,
and its much better mileage, and leave that
RL on the Lot. Your depreciation would be
horrible. And you will be left holding a very hot
potato that nobody is going to want to catch
when you try to unload it. Really think about this..
a defunct car, from a defunct company, with extremely
high cost for replacement parts, when and if you find them..
you are NOT going to want to go to a Chevy dealer for OEM
parts, because the cost will spin your head. You would be
better off buying a Mercedes for the price you would pay
for Saturn/GM parts. This is the downside of that great
"Bargain"...Walk while you can. Only my opinion, and you know
what they say..but I have a 2005 RL that is now a Dinosaur,
and it's like Brand New, with all I have replaced, but its worthless,
and it was the most expensive Saturn made at the time, fully loaded.
now it's value is in the abyss.

Run don't walk to any dealer than a GM, my 05 RL is worthless wnet to a Chevy dealer just to see what it would bring on trade. First thing the saleman said was you know Saturn is out of business. Wow what a way to start off.
You would think GM would want to keep us a customer, $3800 for a prestine 05 Black RL AWD 38K fully oped out. Thanks but no thanks don't need a reide that bad. Think before you jump.

What about offering them, say, $19,900 and the Mazda? The worst they can do is say no...

Personally, I think it depends on your car buying habits. If you are like me and tend to hold on to your cars for a very long time then I would consider it.

If on the other hand you tend to trade your cars in after a few years then it might not be such a good deal in the long run.

Thanks for the replies so far.

T-Bone

I do tend to trade cars in after 2-3 years.

MoparNut

They are firm on their $24,600. Before reading some of the comments on here, I told them to make it $24,000 and they had a deal but they wouldn't drop below the $24.600

bill1940

Ouch, $3800? I was looking at the Amortization Schedule Calculator and after 3 years I would owe $12,563.67. I was thinking that even with the drop in value that I should be able to get that in a trade in value for a fully loaded RL. Seeing your offer... probably not.

docderek05

Thanks for the input. I really like the styling of the RL Vue but it is looking like I might have to look for something else.

Personally, I'd pass for a few reasons. While that price may sound tempting, you'll be upside down on that car forever, so if you trade in cars every few years, you're screwed. I've had various offers between 6k and 9k for my 04 Vue RL AWD with almost 100k miles, but there's a lot of shady dealers out there who will try to lowball you (especially GM dealers).

Secondly, that's new car money for a vehicle with used car mileage. And I don't know about you, but I've NEVER gone easy on a sports vehicle I've test driven. A few examples: the car salesman had me powerslide a 350Z around a turn on a busy intersection, we also did several burnouts(partly because it was the first time i'd driven a 350Z with a stick and the clutch was funny feeling at first), Grand Prix GXP and G8 GT test drives were damn near a touring car race, with almost no time off the loud pedal, The Jeep SRT8... well let's just say I learned just how vicious of a launch its capable of. Point is, that car's probably had a hard life up until now.

Then there's the vehicles themselves. Call me biased, but I personally don't think the new gen is as good of a vehicle overall as the last gen. Sure its quieter, has a nicer looking interior, and has some new gadgets, but the sport aspect of it is lacking. Plus you have to deal with a GM powertrain instead of a fantastic Honda one. And the new gen Vue is sort of a pig on gas for how slow it is.

If you really like that generation Vue RL that much, do yourself a favor and buy a used one. Personally, I'd recommend going with an older gen but that's just me. I've grown attached to the idea of having a vehicle that will run and look brand new forever. Have you checked out any other vehicles? The CX7 is nice, and the Edge Sport is also nice, but very light on the sport. Personally, if I was looking at little sporty utes in that price range, I'd probably be leaning towards a used X3, or honestly since you turn cars over so much just lease something with stable value. You can lease a GLK350 for like 400-500 a month.

DeZire...

I feel the pain, I wanted Saturn to succeed in the worst way..when the Penske deal fell through it was pretty devastating..as I was really beginning to like the design of the 08 and later model RLs..and you could see the potential of what a great looking vehicle it would become in future gens, as I was thinking of trading in and up and on, now all that is in the hopper..too bad.

I think my negativity is really based on the sense we all let the imports kill our car industry, and I feel betrayed by the big three. (in my case, with the Honda Power Plant...I should talk, right?)

I still would pass on the RL, merely for the fact that maintenance is going to be very very expensive going forward on that vehicle, with out-of-stocks, and back orders, and all kinds of logistical nightmares to get parts in a timely manner.
I am sure you can find a real deal on a great SUV that is reasonably priced, and retains more of a residual value.

Best of Luck to you...Doc..
