Default new, more important problem (for me anyhow)

okay.

so i replaced t h e EGR solenoid today to fix that nagging SEL. reset t h e pcm.

now, in t h e 1500-3500 rpm range, i have a slight misfire, but only if you are keeping t h e engine speed in that range. if you are accelerating or decelerating, it seems to operate normally. any ideas anyone?

btw, new plugs (>1500k), new wires, new coil pack (>3000k), and also, t h e EGR valve itself is good, and t h e exhaust smells a bit rich.

are the sparkplugs connected in the right order? 4-1-2-3?

okay, just went out and checked something on a hunch:

my engine is warm, and the egr solenoid is opening for anything over 1500rpms...
when i disconnect the egr system, voila, no problems at all.

for some reason, anywhere over 1500 rpms, something is telling the egr valve to open, or i just got a crappy solenoid (which is possible, since i got it from the local boneyard).

what i need to know is when the egr valve is supposed to open. it's a dohc.

could this possibly be o2 sensor related?

okay, well, here's the recap. i hate to be annoying but this is buggin the crap outta me.

with my egr system connected properly, pcm reset, good plugs, wires, coil, o2 sensor, ects, after the engine is warm, whenever the rpm's hit about 1500 up until about 3500 under light load i get a misfire. this mostly occurs during light acceleration and if i punch the throttle it works just fine. the engine doesnt have this problem when it's cold though.

any clues anyone?

Check your fuel filter\pump... run some compression.... if you have the ability check what your air intake temps are reading at..... Pull your plugs and check and see if they're coated or clean.....

i don't have a compression tester or any way to see what my intake temps are, but i did pull the plugs and they looked very good...no corrosion or oil/soot. like i said, when the egr system is disconnected, it runs like a champ. something is telling the egr solenoid to open the valve when it's not supposed to.

Sounds like you are getting too much EGR flow, enough to induce misfire. I don't think it is the PCM scheduling too much either. It has to somehow be hardware related. The conditions for you getting misfire coincide with the regions of EGR flow scheduling. Does the car idle fine? When you replaced the EGR valve, did you clean the orifices.

When was the last time you replaced the o2 sensor? An aged lean biased o2 sensor can run leaner when EGR is flowing (lean to the point of the approaching the lean misfire limit).

my car is having a very similar problem. Mine idles very low...about 400-500 rpm when warm. When it's cold there is no noticeable misfire.

It's either the EGR or O2 sensor.. they both cost about the same from saturn I guess.
