2005 ION-2 Sedan
Attention Gas, Fuel Light

the "low fuel" message came on,roughly how many miles or gallons are available after the low fuel warning? I drove 4 miles to my house after the fuel warning. will I make it the 4 miles to the gas station? running out is not an option, because I have no one to get me if I run out and I have a 3 year old and 3 month old! HELP PLEASE!!

Well you don't give us much details but using my 2003 ION as an example when my Low Fuel light goes on it's usually after I have used about 10.5/11 Gallons of gas. With a 13.1 Gallon/50L Tank I'm not one to freak out when the light goes off.

If you're MPG is say in the Mid 20's to upper 20's and assuming you have at least 1 Gallon of useable Fuel left in the Tank (or even 1/2 Gal)... One 4 mile trip the Gas Station shouldn't be an issue. For future reference it's not a bad idea to keep a MPG/Fuel Log and calculate how far you could "Virtually" go if you ran your Gas Tank "Dry". Just for the rare occasion you don't want to trust your Gas Gauge/Fuel Light and the Manual's suggestion you have a certain amount of Fuel after the light goes on.

Take your average MPG, "round down" a few miles for a safety margin multiple by your tank size and you'll have some confidence how far you can really go. (Assuming no one is stealing your Gas of course)

If you have your owner's manual, read it to find out fuel and low fuel reserve capacity. It will have at least 1.5-3 gallons when the low fuel light turns on. You should be fine if you go straight to the gas station.

Any chance you have a small can of Gasoline at home for a lawn mower? While you probably still have enough to get to the Station... adding a little extra to the tank wouldn't hurt plus you'd have something to carry the fuel in if you did run out. (Hopefully a kind passerby could make the trip to/from the Gas Station with the Can while you watch over the kids...)

If you haven't already it might not hurt to have a few Tow Truck Service #s handy that you can call should you find yourself stranded and need them to deliver a can of fuel if no one else stops by to help.
