Default 1996 Saturn SC1 - whats it worth?

I am looking at possibly purchasing my second Saturn. I have had my eye on this car (at a tiny dealer) for over a year and a half - yes it has been there that long. He does drive it now and then though so it hasn't been sitting the whole time.

The car is in fantastic shape inside and out and only has 73,000 miles on it. He was originally asking $3175US for it, but has recently dropped his price to $2735 certified/etested - I was able to get him down to $2560US as is. With our lovely taxes (14% from a dealer) this comes out to just over $2900US.

Do you guys think this is still a good deal in the end? I ask because around here Saturn prices seem to be all over the map - many cars with high miles are going for $3500+, while the odd one can be found for $1000 with decent miles (usually too far away though). I only paid $1325 for my current Saturn with 98,000 miles. While I think that may have been a great deal, I feel this other car may not be a deal at all. It's over 2X the price for only 25K miles less - is it worth it?

I am only looking at it because it has such low miles (impossible to find with these cars it seems), is in great shape and the price seems decent - it is just a bummer that we have to pay both taxes on cars bought from a dealer, whereas you have to pay only one privately. My current '93 SC1 has been pretty good to me but now has just over 200,000km (125K miles) on it, which has me wanting to get a backup since I drive 100km/day and greatly depend on my transportation. Not really necessary, but it would offer piece of mind.

If you are wondering about the odd prices, I have converted them all from CDN dollars

in my area, kelly blue book is $3750, so that seems like a good deal, even tho its only a SOHC, it'll still have more 'go' than your '93.

Arent' cars like the civic and corolla best sellers in compared to accords and camrys down south? Might be econoboxes like saturns are more mainstream-- eg-- in demand up there.

For the extra $85, forget the as-is, and get it safetied so you're good to go. Also might give you more rights if the car turns out to be a lemon.

What's this two tax thing? Probably trading a car lessens the tax to the difference in value for the new car buyer, so they have to recoup that somehow?

The taxes apply regardless of which price you purchase it at. So to buy it certified it would be $3120US. I actually prefer an SC1 (SOHC) due to the slightly better mileage on what is really just a commuter for me.

The KBB values actually do not seem to far off for this car (I have found them pathetically low for most older cars). I would consider the private party value of $2500-2800 to probably be more fitting than the $3700 retail value since there is no warranty. The guy is a "dealer", but he only had two or three cars at any time. He's an older Italian guy looking to get out of the business...

The two taxes are the two standard (PST, GST) that we pay on everything here in Ontario (Canada). Private deals only inccur the 6% GST, while dealer sales inccur the 7% GST as well. I've yet to figure out why we have to pay tax on a car the government has already made their money on, but nothing we can do there. I am going to see if he will write the reciept for a lower value though (which most private people will do this) to lower the taxes on my end. I'll probably end up getting it anyways as finding something with this low mileage is nearly impossible, especially for these cars.

I think I am just realizing more that I got an amazing deal on my first Saturn - this car does seem to be quite reasonable if the US value can be up near what NADA and KBB are listing.

Can't do that anymore.
I know this because the total payment written down in the Used Car Ownership change manual thing was $375 *what I paid for the car*, but I still had to pay taxes on the bluebook value, which was $1400 or so. Total taxes came up to like $150...and it was a private sale.

I don't know why the government makes these things so damn complicated. It took me about 3 weeks to get the ownership changed..cuz again, you cant get it changed persons without a safety anymore, theres certain restrictions if you do and you have to pay more taxes...Also I couldn't change it without insurance?!?!? I dunno wtf they make you get insurance first for..but I had to.

I would check the car out very carefully. Some businesses are not real, they are a front for other activity - and I would think someone have an apparently great car for sale, for 18 months, would be a good indication that something else is going on.

or there could be something seriously wrong with the car, like it was cobbled together from 2 wrecks? or it was in a flood? or it smells like dead flesh?

Good point. Id be crawling under the thing, taking off tires, pulling up carpets, checking literally EVERYTHING. If you can get that car for that price, but it now. $3800bux CAD for a Saturn with about 100,000kms on it??! I'd be on that like a fat kid on cake.
Where are you located in Ontario?

I'd get a Carfax on it first. Go from there.

Default Re: 1996 Saturn SC1 - whats it worth?

Picked the car up tonight - I've had a good look and drive in it a couple times. The guy is semi-retired (in his 60's or so) and really doesn't put anything into trying to sell his cars, he is actually just getting out of the business - and his lot is in a not-so-busy industrial section so the fact it wasn't selling does not surprise me really.

I have no faith in carfax after running reports on a couple of cars I have had - not only did it miss info, but it made even more up that wasn't true.

I paid $2900 CDN ($3250 w/ taxes) and he marked it on the receipt for $2500 to save me a touch on taxes. '98GoldSL1, you are right that even if he puts a lower value you have to pay minimum on the book value, but we will see what book value is - he was guessing it wouldn't be any less than $2500 so that is why we settled on that for the reciept. I'm located near Fort Erie - the car was in St. Catharines. I think this car is a pretty good deal, but nothing too outrageous either. Like I say I only paid $1500CDN for my other Saturn with 150K km on it and it has had no problems out of the ordinary (waterpump, tensioner, control arms, rear hub assembly) for the mileage. The more I looked around, I see how much of a steal I got. The fact the interior was covered in a 1/4" of doghair throughout had a LOT to do with that though - if the fools would have just cleaned it they could have gotten 2x the money for it.

I don't plan on putting the car on the road for a while, but I will find out how much of a pain the government is when it is time to do so. If they require insurance and a safety it can just sit until I am ready to drive it. I've always purchases my cars "as is" - I don't have much faith in a safety coming from a dealer's buddy, and a safety doesn't cover much either. I like to have a good look myself, since in the end I will be doing the work anyways

Thanks for the comments and advice guys - Now I've got two Saturns that should serve reliably for a long time coming If I get a chance I will post a few pics tomorrow.

If any particular government employee has enough time on their hands to be surfing random car sites, dig up and match my username here to my real name and investigate further (if you search you will find it I am sure) - I'll gladly hand over the extra $50. I would like to think they have bigger fish to fry

Oooooooh! its invisible green!

I had a '74 SuperBeetle that color. Had people pull out in front of me and hit the car, ripping the left front fender off the car, twice within 30 days.

after the second accident I painted the whole car bright yellow.

Seriously, in the summer on a tree lined / green -lawn-area street people will have trouble registering that color. Other 'invisible car' colors are darkblue/grey (blends in with the road) and dark reddish brown.

Looks like you got a nice machine there!
