Default the old paint trick- invitation to shysters?

hi sages - havent seen a thread on painting an L100 sedan. my 01 model question is what is the unique painting trick to repaint my hood? sand/steel wool off the rust, prime and paint doesnt seem to work. the paint comes off within 6mos and rerusts promptly. there is a 1 foot by 1 foot spot where the paint has come off . my experience has been most auto paint shops wont warranty their work, yet want a big pay day . one joker wanted 2k to repaint the whole car. the color is the common color of galaxy silver gray. body below the beltline including the hood is a special plasti/metal alloy with a black primer or undercoat under the paint so dents pop out. where am i going wrong or have i just run into clip joints again? thanks tons bob f

Look on car-part.com for a correct color hood with good paint near you. They just bolt on. Way cheaper than a repaint job.

There is a silver hood in Fruitland Park for $50. I do not know if it is the correct silver that matches your car. I put a 2000 nose on my car and they are a different silver than 2002. The color code is on the sticker on the cover that lifts up over your spare tire.

hi 02LW- checked the sticker on the in trunk spare tire well where there is a series of numbers as advised. which one is the paint number? also oddball question . noticed the donut spare tire has a production date of 2100 which means the 21st week of 2000. have only used it 2-3 times since received car new in late 2000(a 2001 model). problem is chunks of the tread have come off probably due to heat, age and chemical breakdown. figure donut will blow out if used in high speed escapes from coppas on thunder road. never bought one of these. are they generally available at tire stores? dont think a regular spare tire will fit in the well. figure dealer will offer me a bargain at big $$$$. thanks tons for your advice. bob f

Try preparing the hood using Jasco Prep & Primer solution, available in quart size from Home Depot or paint shops or hardware stores. This is a mild phosphoric acid solution that chemically changes any rust back into metal. Makes the metal more resistant to rust in future (but doesn't make the metal stronger because the rust caused pitting so some metal is missing).

Once that's done, than try lightly sanding followed by painting.

Phosphoric acid has been used for more than a century to mollify rust. In my RVs undercarriage, I like how it turns most of the rusted frame members into a hard black surface that seems impervious to further rusting AND also readily accepts paint if I chose to use paint.

The paint code will be at the bottom of the sticker.

It will say something like BSE/CLR Coat. Then to the right will be the paint code

The hood on the L series is good old plain steel. It's only the fenders, door panels and bumpers that are composite.

Dupli-color do Galaxy Silver (if yours is Galaxy Silver) and is easily obtainable in rattle cans. My son's 2003 L300 is Galaxy Silver and so far I've resprayed both bumpers, rear fenders and one front fender. The result was acceptable.

If you don;t want to go that route yourself, then I would suggest going to one of the inexpensive place that does resprays for little or no money. If it's just the hood, then masking off from the rest of the car is a breeze and there is no blending work to be dealt with. You will NOT get a 100% match to the rest of the car color as that is 20 year old pain and faded. So just accept that reality. Like all L series, they are not classics and most are cheap as chips, so spend only to getting it looking acceptable. It's honestly not worth much more effort.

On the ID Decal folks have mentioned to you. The top row has the VIN # to the Left. Below that are all the various codes that detail what features your car has. There should be a gap then and then a final row. To the Left is the code that details the Paint Technology, the Center details the Exterior Color and the Right side details the vehicle order #.

This link to Automotive Touch Up also allows you to find the paint code:

https://www.automotivetouchup.com/to...urn/2001/l100/

However, if you check that link it does show that yours is NOT Galaxy Silver, but a color called Sebring Silver. Your paint code in your car is the determining factor though. Only go with that.
