1998 SW2
Default Re: Whats your MPG?

I just drove round trip San Jose, CA to Santa Barbara CA and back in my 1998 SW2.

Manual Transmission (the M2 version with the taller 5th gear - 2,000 RPM at 55 MPH)

593 Miles.

One tank of gas.

The gas gauge needle was just above the orange warning mark and the Low Fuel light had not yet lit.

I drove both legs very late at night and kept to around 55 MPH. I was not in a hurry, so I just tooled along.

If I had been feeling brave I would have kept going to see if I could squeeze 600 miles from one tank. Has anyone ever done that?

Original engine - not rebuilt
M2 Manual Transmission (higher top gear)
Mobile 1 in the engine
Mobile 1 in the transmission
Yokohama LRR Orange Oil Tires rated 44psi filled to 50psi
Bosch Platinum+4 plugs with 100,000 miles on them
Radio antenna stowed in the back
Sylvania LED taillights, LED running lights, LED licence plate lights
Passenger seat still in car :-)

I have also noticed that if I keep RPMs at or below 2,000 the car uses almost no oil. 1,200 miles per quart.

David
...
Usually I ride a bike, but when I drive my 1998 DOHC SW2 5 spd Saturn, I get 44+ MPG at 55 MPH
Original Owner: 1998 SW2
592 Miles - One tank!

35.8 mpg average
...from a 590-mile trip. Only about an hour of A/C use.
Mostly highway & the posted speed is up to 75 mph
The suction-cup navigator shows my average speed to date is 57 mph.
205/60R15 842 rev/mile (195/60R15 is 859)
I replaced the passenger side drive axle when I got home, although the shaking wobble was probably the inordinate amount of foam-backed balance weight settling into place at around 60 mph.
...
Competition Clutch 10Lb. Flywheel. 14 stalls to date (and loving it).
Oil use is 1 ounce per 100 miles with ~230,000 miles on the engine

In my SL1 manual 2001 I got around 39-40MPG on average. Now in my 1998 SW1 auto I get around 34-37MPG with the same driving..

Oh i liked when i had my 96 sc1. Automatic. The air filter was needing replaced. Slightly modified throttle position sensor it was actually an accident but i left it like that when i noticed the highway mpg with a good not cracked sensor was only getting up to 38 mpg and my accidently cracked one would lean it out a little because the throttle shaft wouldn't catch right away. Maybe 5-10 degrees turned it would catch and turn with it. But just that alone made the highway mpg go from 38 mpg to 46 mpg. So i wasn't complaining. It actually seemed to run fine. Minus the "launch miss". If u were at a stop sign and just hit the gas. Every single time .. Idling. Hit the throttle. Hear 1 pop and then it would go. I guess the sensor had a delay because it didn't work at idle correctly.

Last check on my 93 came out to 35 mpg. Sw1 5 speed. Found the coolant sensor to be defective. Haven't gotten any update mpg with the new sensor and relocated air intake temp sensor yet.. I usually move the intake temp sensor as close as possible to the throttle body. And on a old tbi saturn thats a pretty far leap. . may not make much difference but on a warm day the engine temp could bring it up a couple degrees by the time it gets there. . hopefully i will get a reading soon with these couple fixes. Although its mostly city milage this time.
Heck if the city milage jumps up i know it works.

After getting the fuel/vapor leaks sorted out and the new fuel pump in, Iím finally seeing decent numbers again. Itís not quite the 25-26 I was getting at itís best, but it is starting to get colder out so it may just be ruining rich a little longer. That 23.4 was also when I started using the a/c again for about 50% of the tank, which is much better that the previous 17.8 (To be fair, that was 90%-100% A/C usage, but Iím fairly certain it would have still been over 21 if I had been using it for the whole tank.)

It seems like my gauge gauge has been reading more accurately ever sense the new pump as well. Itís the same fuel sender that was on the old pump, just removed and swapped to the new pump. I usually fill the car when the needle is between 1/16th and 1/8th of the gauge. Before that would be between 8.5 - 9 gallons. Now I am getting between 9.5 - 10 gallons. That seems a little better to me anyway for a 12.8 gallon tank.

I remember reading here recently (I forget who posted it) that without the plastic wheel well liners installed, mpg went down some. I have been missing the liner for the rear passenger wheel well ever since it got ripped out last winter in an accident. Itís probably negligible, but it would be interesting if mpg goes up even slightly whenever I get a new bumper and wheel well liner.

That still seems low. I usually see 28 all winter and 32 all summer. At least when I used to drive that is.

A 97 SL2 with automatic was only ever rated for 24/34. The manual is a little better at 27/37. The revised ratings go as low as 21/31. So Iím probably not doing to bad for a car that rarely sees the highway. Plus, Iím pretty sure I have replaced everything that could effect fuel economy. (Minus a manual manual swap anyway ) Coolant temp sensor, intake temp sensor, thermostat, both o2 sensors, catalytic converter, fuel pump and cleaned the EGR. Gas has also been hovering around $2 a gallon for a while now so itís not like itís breaking the bank to fill up every 2 weeks lol.

Wish this virus thing would be in our rear view mirrors. Since the beginning of the year I've probably spent less that $125 on gas. I have no place to drive, anymore, other than to the store or to (on the rare occasion) get gas. Went a couple of miles on the freeway the other day and I swear I heard my car going "Wheee! Wheee!" as it hadn't been out of 4th gear for months. I'd love to do some highway driving to see where my mileage is, now. It used to be about 36-38 on the open highway.

we've had a few cold weeks here avg between 45į and 65į
mileage suffers due to long warm up (while driving)
mileage at last fill up was down to 42.6
I have been running 89 octane non-ethanol gas all summer, switching over to e10 87 octane for winter.

Hit a record best 49.18 mpg with all interstate travel at 65 mph. On this road trip, I found a fuel oil company just outside Hattiesburg, MS that offered E0 fuel in 87, 89, and 93 octane. Purchased 5 gallons of the 93, and topped it off with the 89. Rarely does this car get less than 40 mpg.

About 33/34 on the SC2, 225k miles, conventional oil
Perhaps 38/ to best of 41 on the SL1. Synthetic oil.( 353 k , but rebuilt motor , so...? )
But people drive like lunatics now, Iím sure if I reduced speeds to 65 mph, mileage would improve exponentially.

35 mpg average = 520-mile trip/14.8 gallons with a lawnmower in the trunk. No A/C use. Keeping up with the new cars on mostly highway & the posted speed is up to 75 mph
Front 35 psi cold 205/60R15 tires** with no balance issues or defective CV axles (except for acceleration vibration while cornering , like accelerating on a curved highway on-ramp. I suspect that the outer CV does not have enough grease, but what do I know?)
**I did not correct odometer reading for the tire size.
Note: A lawnmower in the trunk does interesting things to front/rear weight distribution for cornering while braking.
