Default Blower doesn’t work on high

I just bought a 01 sc1 and one issue it has is the blower doesn’t work on high. What should I look for and check to solve this issue? The rest of the settings work just not high.

Generally, there are 2 modes of fan operation:

1.) Direct driven, via switch, or, preferably, switched relay activation.

2.) Reduced speed operation is achieved by connecting a RESISTANCE
in the circuit line between the power source and the fan.

Generally, the resistance modes fail Before the direct connection does....

In the Saturn 's' the fan activation switch incorporates resistors,
and also direct connection for 'full' operation.

My only fan ops problem was a mouse nest filling the fan assembly
about 18 years ago... so I don't have further info.

I will try to check the manual, hopefully.

The fan switch sends a "high speed" fan signal to the BCM which then sets the fan to high speed. Either there's an issue with this signal to the BCM or an issue with the fan motor or it's ground system. Much harder to diagnose than '91-'99's that the switch does everything and nearly always only works on high when something fails.

For high speed, power is sent through the switch, out pin F on the connector to the BCM at J2-A8 using a orange wire with no indicated splices/connectors between the two. It comes back out of the BCM at J3-B6 to the high side HVAC Blower Relay control in the IPJB on another orange wire.

J2 is the blue connector at the BCM, A8 is the pin on the connector. All pins are marked, likely hard to see. The connector has A & B rows, row B is closer to the offset alignment notch on the connector.

J3 is the brown connector at the BCM, B06 is the pin. The connector has A & B rows, row B is closer to the offset alignment notch on the connector.

I'd check for 12v in/out of the BCM, if it's coming in but not going out the BCM has failed and should be replaced. If it's coming out then likely the 5-pin relay has failed, but I'd check wire continuity at each step and try swapping relays (also possibly the fusebox has issues).

If the HVAC blower is the only thing wrong with the BCM, it can safely be bypassed by cutting the wire at J2A8 and J3B6 then connecting them, all it does is activate the HVAC blower relay to send full 12v rather than go through the speed settings.

Thank you, Fetch
for Superior knowledge !

It might be worth de-powering, then un-connect/re-connect the BCM.

Maybe 're-seat' the relay in question, or replace it if contacts are worn.

You may find my thread from long ago useful. A 2000 will have the same electrical system as your 2001 model. FWIW I had this car for about 3 more years after this post and didn't have the problem again.

I have noticed that the relay for the fan clicks when you switch it to high, but not when it's on the other three settings. Can you hear the relay click when you flip it on high even if it's not running?

I replaced the relay and it is working great again. My guess is the relay had excessive resistance causing the fan to be very slow it did work but just barely.
