2002 L-Series 2.2L Sedan
Red Face 2002 L200 Saturn intermittent Security Light Issue

Hello all.
I'm in a jam and hope i can get some help here. I own the 2002 L200 Saturn that just started to have Security display on the dash on and off. When the light comes on its accompany with a few other dash lights. Sometimes the car will start and stop and other times the car just run fine. Sometimes it will not start at all but after about 10 minutes or so of waiting and trying again it will start. When the Security light show and stays the AC compressor will come in and out of operation. This seem to happen more when the car is warm or weather is hot outside. I have attempted to reset the Passlock many times but didn't help. I have already replaced the Ignition Cylinder but still same issue. Any idea what else to go after? Any help will be appreciated.

There are four security modes; key fob Lock/security enabled with a blinking indicator once every three seconds, OFF, flashing quickly to indicate either a theft or tamper mode, and ON. The remote keyfob is used to enable or disable Passlock, GM's factory security system. Bells and whistles aside, when Passlock is enabled and activated (theft or tamper mode), injector operation is disabled - the starter will crank the engine but never fire up. Normal startup; key fob remote pressed to Unlock doors, disable Passlock, inserting the ignition key to ON position, instrument panel lights turn on (including security) then off with seat belt, battery, oil, brake and security left on. Starting turns off security, battery and oil lights. The security indicator should be OFF. When lights turn on, all electronics perform an internal power up self test - when each mini computer module passes its own self tests, their respective indicator is turned off. Modules; ecm/pcm, bcm, abs, and airbag. Each module controls their indicator(s). The exception is the ecm/pcm. The bcm drives almost all the indicators except airbag and abs/tc. Passlock is part of the bcm.

There are two ways for security to prevent engine running; theft or tamper mode. Tamper mode may occur if the ignition key is turned incorrectly (Passlock sensor detects lock cylinder rotation) and security begins to flash quickly instead of turning off. In this case, leaving ignition ON for ten minutes until Passlock resets (turns off security or stays on) resets Passlock. Cycling ignition off and restarting should allow engine running. Whether a theft or tamper mode occurs, injector operation is disabled to prevent engine running.

Are there any aftermarket electronics (alarm, remote start)?

Thanks fdryer for your detailed response. No there are no aftermarket parts installed on the vehicle. Do you know why when the engine is cool as in the morning not a problem at all. No dash light indicating any problem.. But once the engine warms up the problem starts. First the "service with a wrench" light is the first to appear. then follow with "security" light. service light goes away but security light stays on (not blinking, just one). once the security light is on the AC compressor goes in and out but everything else works just fine.

You're describing several issues that may or may not have any relation to each other. Search for body control module and its many roles to appreciate how electronics and programs are run from each module. Many functions not related to engine management, EFI systems operating the engine and monitoring emissions, are handled among the other modules - engine computer (ecm/pcm), body control module (bcm), airbag module, radio, OnStar, abs/tc module, etc.. Each are self contained programmed controllers to handle specific tasks. The bcm carries general duties while acting as gateway communications for all error codes generate from each module and outputting them thru the OBD II port where GM can use their scantool for programming, diagnostics and sensor testing while diy home readers can only access limited error codes related to engine and transmission faults (emissions errors).

First things to try is to leave the engine running and stopping by Autozone (unless you have a personal reader) to connect a reader to decode stored live error codes while the check engine light remains on. The check engine light (car or engine icon) is not the wrench light (wrench icon). The cel can be decoded by generic readers. Wrench errors cannot except by GM's scantool.

If security blinks then stays ON while driving, this indicates Passlock failed in a fail safe mode; it detected a problem and disables itself from interfering with engie running. Since this is the bcm, ac signals are sent from the hvac control panel to the bcm to direct the ecm/pcm to turn on ac. This may be either a separate ac problem by itself or a possible second hint of bcm issues. Search past threads about bcm issues. You can try isolating the wrench light, security, and ac issues by leaving off ac use and decoding any stored codes (as long as it a cel and not a wrench light). If its a wrench light you may have to visit either a repair shop that can decode GM wrench codes or visit GM. Expect to pay a fee for these services at repair shops or dealer. Autozone and other places provides free readings but only for the cel and abs.
