1997 SW2
Default high-ish idle, revs drop slowly between shifts

ok i know there are other threads with similar problems, but in my opinion they arent as detailed as id like.

1997 sw2
5 spd
111000 miles
spark plugs new
wires good.

my problem is:

high-ish idle, about 1300 rpm when cold and 900-1000 when warm. coolant temp never goes above the 1/4 way mark on the temp guage even on the warmer days. albeit there havent been many hot days yet in the central valley of california.

now when i am driving i am driving for gas mileage so i shift earlier to avoid winding the engine up. shifts normally come around 1800 rpms. the acceleration is never hard even when getting on the freeway.

what happens is when i clutch in/throttle off, there is a slight blip in the throttle, revving perhaps a couple hundred rpms before dropping, and dropping slowly. even when i take my foot off the gas a couple of seconds before pressing the clutch the motor still surge a couple hundred rpms.

this is opposed to the normal result of immediate rpm drops when stepping on the clutch and off the gas.

i have seen possible leaky intake manifolds to tps to dirty maf sensor. the maf sensor must be located further up inside the intake because i cant see it, but i can see that there is alot of soot or carbon inside the throttle body. in my 94 convertible the maf was infront of the throttle body.

any different ideas?

Temp gauge and idle are probably both due to a bad ECTS. Visit our How-To Library; the first couple of "sticky" posts cover this subject.

The PCM is programmed to drop the engine speed gradually when you push in the clutch. It shouldn't go up at all, but again, this could be the ECTS.

There is no MAF sensor.
