Default L-series 3.0 oil leak

My 2000 LW300 (60,000 k) has developed an oil leak. The oil seems to be dripping in the area of the long bolts on the oil pan close to the flywheel. I have been told it may be the rear main seal. A local Saturn mechanic says rear main seal leaks are common (he says he has two L series 3.0 in the shop now each with a rear main seal leak...this was a telephone conversation he
has not looked at my car). One of the forum members says he has never heard of this particular engine having rear main seal leaks. I would appreciate any information or experience anyone has had with this problem...
or any other ideas as to the source of this leak.
