Default Using SL2 Tires (185/65R15) on a 2005 Ion 2 (195/60R15)

Hi, my 96 SL2's transmission died on me a few weeks ago. Wife and I went to purchase a van for her, but she didn't like any of the vehicles so we ended up buying a 2005 Ion 2 for me in fairly good condition.

2005 Ion 2 is in need of an alignment and new tires. I had just recently replaced the tires on the 96 SL2. Size is 185/65R15.

Would there be any problems with replacing the tires on the Ion 2 (195/60R15) with the SL2 tires? Any issues anyone can see? Anyone have any experience doing something similar to this?

Compare for yourself ...
https://tiresize.com/comparison/

As long as the SL2 rims bolt up to the Ion and clear the Ion brakes (which I assume they will) it looks pretty good to me. Almost identical height, speedometer will be very close. Just a little narrower. I'd probably run the old tires and rims if I had them on hand.

It might be tough to junk the SL2 with no rims ... and I would want to keep the Ion rims since they belong on the car.

Thanks, looks almost identical. At 70mph (on the speedometer) I would actually be going 70.9. I believe the bolts are in the same spot.

Good call on whether or not I can junk the SL2 with no tires/rims. I'm guessing the rims are different since its a different width and I would like in the future to go back to the OEM size. But, I have probably 50 or 60K miles left on the old SL2 tires. Guess I'll have to call around and see what places are willing to take a donation if the car wouldn't have tires.

You may be able to junk the car - let them take it with the rims and then follow them to the scrap yard and then take the rims ... it's a pain but they would probably need the rims to transport the car to the scrap yard. You can ask them about this - can't be the first time someone wanted to keep the rims and tires from a junk car.

they almost clear the brakes if one doesn't have balancing weight on the internal side. At least the alloy ones (the offset is different from the ion).

fixed/replaced so far: side mirror, window trims x4, trunk floor, radiator bushing, alternator, starter, LCA x2, sway bar bushings x2, end links x2, timing chain tensioner, O2 sensor.

Ughh, so I finally got around to trying to swap the wheels. Jacked up both the Ion and SL2. Got excited when I saw the Ion wheel cover would fit perfectly on the SL2 tires. Put on the SL2 tires and it seems the wheel and brake may be slightly touching. Its really hard to tell and I'm not sure I'd be 100% sure unless I put all 4 SL2 tires on and tried to drive it around. But, it seems a little too close to comfort for me. Damn, and I just found a couple junkyards that were going to let me take the wheels after transporting it to the junkyard.

Anyone try spacers? I'm wondering if I should just call it a day and buy new tires for the Ion

EDIT: Now I'm not so sure. The wheel and the brake are super close. I was able to get the WD-40 piece of plastic for the sprayer through a hole on the wheel to the next hole. So, I think maybe its not actually touching. I tried to do some manipulation of the tire back and forth and it sounds the same between the stock Ion tires and the SL2 tires. Anyone car to chime in. Not sure if I should just put all 4 SL2 tires on and take it for a drive. I would hate to do something really stupid though.

I don't know the answer. If it's that close you may want a wheel spacer anyway. I guess the car has a 4x100 bolt spacing. If so, there are a bunch of Spartec 3mm 4x100 universal wheel spacers on Amazon for like $10 per pair. Not sure how well they work but if it's so close you can't even tell whether it's touching, I'm not sure what else you could do.

Is it safe to use spacers like that? I think it clears it without the need for spacers, but just the fact that when I put on the tire I first couldn't tell gives me pause.

For what its worth I can get an extra $60 for junking the car with the tires on... I think I've probably gotten tires + install for around $200 the last few times. I'm considering just junking the SL2 with the brand new tires installed.

Update: I swapped out the tires between the SL2 and the Ion and drove it around my block and it appears to drive fine. Front tires still have me slightly concerned as I'm betting there is a 1mm gap between the brake and the wheel. Anything I should be concerned about since its so close? I couldn't notice any strange sounds or dragging or anything when I drove the car. My plan was to test it out this week and see if there are any issues.

Cdog: stupid question here: does the electronic odo on the ION compensate for new tires of a different size ? Is there an adjustment that can be made to the readings if it doesn't ?

I would like to go to 15" wheels on my 05 ION 1 at some point and I'm curious.

It can be recalibrated by a gm dealer.

Thanks for that, 2006ion2. I've kept a record of my gas mileage since the first tank and want to keep accurate figures and didn't know how this would work if I changed wheel size.Everything has gotten so electronically sophisticated and sensored I had no clue what was involved.

Again, thanks.
