Default license plate fees

What do you pay annually for license plates in your area?
Do you have emissions testing, also?

Just got my 2003 license stickers today for my Saturn. Total cost including tax & fees was $38.75. E-Check not required for another year. ($19.50/2yrs.)

Up here in Ontario if your car is older than 3 years or younger than 20 you have to get an emissions test every other year of ownership. Also if you purchase a used car it needs to be tested unless a test was done within the previous 6 months. The cost is about $30. If you fail the test you have to get it fixed to a maximum cost of $400. If you've reached the maximum you'll get a conditional pass and have to start over again next year. Generally speaking the numbers (NOx, CO, hydrocarbons) you have to meet in order to pass are VERY liberal. You would have to be driving an oil-burning POS not to pass!

Licence sticker renewals in my particular area are $78 per year.

mine were $69. $15 of that is the service fee for having a personalized plate "difrent" and $54 was the plate fee itself. our emission testing was dropped sometime in 199x. not that it mattered since saturn cars were excluded due to pcm weirdness that could make them fail the test. i guess it was easier to except saturn than to train the testers how to test a saturn.

Massachusetts' figures (IIRC, I think they've been raised since I last paid): $52 for the plates (2-year registration), $30 for an annual safety and emissions inspection.

I just renewed this morning in Memphis. All cars in the city limits have to be inspected. It's free but a horrible 1-2 hour wait. My regular tags for one year were $148.00.

Ahhh...the lovely e-Check. Gotta love the emissions testing that screws up more than it's correct. Since I live in Ohio as well, I pay the normal price plus an additional $40 bucks a year for my special plates "YELO SC2".

On my saturn last year I think there was around a 40$ fee we dont have emissions testing here in Indiana. Then my plates were $386. They are only 208$ for my grand am

Why the price difference?
Cost? Weight?

I think its because of the differences in class. Certain class cars get different discounts. The yellow SC2 was registered as a sport coupe therefore had high plates. The Grand Am is registered as midsize sedan. Which gets a larger discount. If I would have gotten the V6 coupe it would have been a sport coupe thats why I decided to get the 4 cyl sedan. Indiana is very weird

Who in the world thought up that strategy?
Does the govt. sit around @ the begining of every model year to decide what car goes into what class? I would like to be the fly on the wall during some of those sessions. Sounds like tax money well spent .

Default license plate fees

Here in Virginia, I pay $35.00 a year for registration renewal and another $15.00 for emissions testing...This year, I'll get my car inspected at a Saturn dealer as recommended by a few Saturn owners I've spoken with. As for taxes, My being military and a non-resident, I'm exempt.

In New York, everything has its price

Inspection (Safety & Emissions) = $35

Plates/registration = $67.50 every two years

Yeah I know its stupid if I would have gotten the V6 in my car they would have registered it as a sports sedan which would have been the same as the saturn. Its very stupid

For my Acura, it's around $200 annually, no emissions here.

Also, for my saturn, it's only about $140. Since it's from Colorado, it has a permanent emissions sticker.

Here in Georgia my tags for a 2002 L200 was $209 and $20 of that was the tag fee. The rest of it was a personal property tax. As the car gets older the tax will decrease. No emissions test for the first 3 model years and then it will cost $25 to get tested. OF course, my car may be worn out before I ever have to get it tested. lol...

NC

$25/year for tag

$30 for emissions & safety -- $9.25 if county exempt from emissions

Property tax yearly - I pay about $100 per year for cars worth about 14K.

I renewed my tags for Vue today at a cost of $110.00 ($25.00 which goes for a specialized state parks plate) here in a small town outside of Nahville, Tennessee. Some people complain about having to pay $85.00, I don't mind paying out that much for the freedom to operate a vehicle. I would pay up to $500.00 per year if it could lower the overall tax burdern on citizens.
