Default early 2004 ecu's

What was the cut-off month where saturn changed the coding in the ecu.
Also what is the difference between the two. I have heard early 04's dont have the limiters in first gear but do have a 100mph limiter where as the rest have limiters in 1st and a limiter at 120mph.
if the the early 04's dont have all the limitations in 1st gear I REALLY want one. I have no need to go faster than 100 so its a good trade off.
Oh and are the redline ecu's the same as non rl ecu's
Thanks Drew

Let me jog my memory... feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Starting with 2004MY with the introduction of the J35...

'04 V6 FWD/AWD/RL are limited to 100mph. Early builds of these (apparently very rare and no way to know) allowed full throttle in first gear, while later builds limited throttle to an estimated 50-75%.

'05-'07 Non-Redline FWD/AWD - Limited to 100mph with throttle reduction in 1st.

'06-'07 Redline FWD/AWD - Limited to 120mph with throttle reduction in 1st.

damn so theres no cut off month.. Ill try and work some magic with the Cadillac dealership to see if they could possibly reflash the car to an early 04's ecu. Im sure they can do this altho they probably arent supposed too.
and burnout I think you meant 05-07 redlines not 06-07 mines 05 and is limited at 120.well actually 117 lol

If you have AWD, say goodbye to your RDM if you do this though.

I was working at Saturn when the '04s came out... they are monsters when they are not limited through first gear. FWD6 models with the 16" tires especially break them loose all the time, and AWD6 models will bark all 4 tires on a hard launch.

If I just mash on the throttle I sit in a cloud of smoke for a few seconds lol once I did this with the a/c on and a cloud of smoke ended up in my cab. Is that with the reduction? (04 v6) and dosent putting it in the I gear give us all the power and no traction control

Aah, you're right Drew... I messed up and can't edit it now. Blah!

Dugg I'd say that you have a non-limited ECU just by what you described. I could never do that even with my puny 16" wheels.

I have some old pictures of my '05 ECU... if you could take pictures of your ECU we could compare them for the sake of research. Maybe there's a build date on it, or some sort of code... I don't know.

You can tell by the sound more than anything. On the updated ECU, if you floor it - the engine has the same tone all the way through 1st gear, and as it rolls into second you hear the cams phase and it growls in a much different tone. On the original - you can't really hear a difference.

IIRC - I thought an ECU flash was in order for the early 2004 models to get them up to spec with the later ones, but I could be mistaken. I think it was one of the first things GM did to make them stop eating RDMs.

Tell her you need to test the differential and that it's the only way.

ok so I checked with my nearest cadillac dealership about the vin from the 04 donor vehicle I found. The production date is 9/23/03. EARLY 2004 vue. That should be a good ecu then right??
What would the downsides to this mod be considering the ecu controls alot of things. When they reflashed does anyone know what all they changed

@05blueredline how easy is it for you to break your tires lose with your current ECU? I have slightly smaller than stock tires and I rarely take off WITHOUT squealing the tires with only 1/3 throttle pressure.

Maybe simply timing the 0 to 60 time would prove weather or not your ECU is limited? I've heard rumors that Saturn limited 1st gear to significantly reduce the 0 to 60 time due to complaints of the Vue being "to fast" - I don't know if this is true or not.

If I have my car in L on a cool night the tires will spin for a second or two then it has a seconds worth of lag at 2.5k rpms and then jets up to 6k. Im nearly positive mines limited because of the lag and I cant hear vtec kick in plus I have an 05 fwd rl.

So I bought the ECU from the seller, Its the exact one they had a picture of. I install it and when I go to turn on my car, it turns the engine over but then kills it instantly. What could that be all about? Faulty ECU or what because this is from an 04 3.5 vue

You need to have your car's VIN inputted into the ECU by a dealership. The ECU is talking to the BCM and the VINs aren't matching up, hence the shutdown.

You are one lucky guy finding that ECU! Let's hope it unlocks some powa

Let us know how your testing works out (ie: no traction control and 120 mph speed limiter?) once you get the ECM reprogrammed to match your VIN.

I'm defenitely curious.

I would love to hear that clip - any chance you have a take off or drive by clip as well? Your old exhaust sounded amazing.
