Default New radio in a 07 Vue : lose airbags?

I am looking into replacing my stock radio, and came back from Best Buy with a new question. The installer said if i bypassed Onstar (which I want to do), I would lose the airbags on the car. Now I know I need a GMlan06 to keep onstar and the door chimes, but I care about neither, and would rather not spend the 120$. I have never heard anyone mention this for the Vue, and would dismiss it as Best Buy rubbish, if I did not remember someone had to install a radio in parallele and hide the oem radio under the front seat on a cavalier to keep something active. the only harness I am considering, if the airbag thing is a crock, is the steering wheel command one at 59$. Al least, I use those...

i cant imagine you would lose the airbags. maybe he meant that if they went off no one would come to help you because of onstar

Not using that module can cause numerous electrical gremlins.I have been installing professionally for 15 years and if a customer refuses to get the module,I refuse to do the install. To much liability.

Just a couple of things you can lose:
Airbags
OnStar
Chime
Domelight
Check engine light can either come on for no reason,OR it wont come on at all (have seen both)

Its not Best Buy crap,Its GM crap for integrating all this in the radio.

If you have to have a aftermarket radio, just get the part.

Pretty sure you're not gonna lose your airbags without the module. Throwing a check engine light also sounds pretty far fetched as well. I've never heard of either of these things happening. Also, chimes ARE retained in the Vue as well.

As it is the OP car, they are free to do what they like with it.I am only reporting what effects I HAVE SEEN PERSONALLY on multiple GM vehicles including the Saturn Vue.

This man speaks the truth. I've seen turn signals and headlights not work, as well as heated seats. And this is cars I have personally worked on, and diagnosed the problem with. That said I've also seen cars with just the harness that develop no problems, or at least report no problems.

If it was me, I wouldn't risk it. Just suck it up and pay the $150 for the right parts. It's not worth the possibility of the airbags not going off when you need them most IMO. Oh and if you or someone in your car die cuz your airbag didn't go off, don't expect any sort of money out of it, the aftermarket warranty will indemnify GM of any issues as you have removed part of the system.

I will definately be looking at a standard DIN radio, and no onstar crap, in my next car search.

Turn signals? Airbags? I wonder what these have to do with a radio. If they have a circuit that goes through the radio, it should say on the schematic. I might have a peek before I blow 150$ on something I have not used in the year and a half I have owned the car.

The radio communicates on the Class 2 Data network with the rest of the car. This is also how the radio knows when the car is on or not, and how fast the car is going. Newer GMs use a different system called the GM LAN network. Chrysler also has a similar setup as well.

Data networks are only going to become more popular as time goes on. It saves them money in wiring and weight leading to better performance and economy. S you'll have to learn to live with it. And it can be a real PITA to work with without the right tools (remote start in an LX cars before they came out with the date integration modules was hell)
