Default Timing Chain, Anyone Have One Break?

Was talking with one of my regular customers at work on Friday, he commented that the timing chain on his 03 L200 broke last week. I'm aware it was an issue on the L-Series but has anyone broke a chain on the ION?

I believe there was a bulletin around 2003 when the Ion first came out that they had a problem with one of the links in the chain and they could fail, usually would occur at a very low mileage. Otherwise they are bullet proof and should never require changing.

+1, they SHOULD never break, as they have automatic hydraulic tensioners, virtually eliminating the chance for failure. The problem the initial ecotecs had a design flaw in the chain used, as far as I know the ion was never effected. As evidence of the toughness of the system, one driver had his engine fail after 365,867 miles and it wasn't a normal wear part that failed, it was his head that failed.

Actually, I did have a few headaches but it was the cars head that failed.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I knew of that Delivery Man finally succumbed a bad cylinder head, but at the service that provided him, it deserved a rest. My question was did anyone suffer a failure on an ION, it was a known issue on the L-Series, not a real common one, but an issue.

if in the 14 days this thread has been up nobody reported anything, I'd say it's safe to assume there were no abnormal failures of thiming chains on Ions.
