Default Metal tapping sound after rebuild

Did a rebuild on my 2001 SOHC (new rings, pistons with oil drain holes, crank, bearings, seals) and started it up for the first time. There is a tapping noise that almost sounds like valve tap (i am unsure on this). Cylinder #3 has low compression. Any thoughts on what the issue might be? My first thought was that i am going to have to pull the head back off to inspect the cylinder itself, but i wish to avoid that if possible.

What did it sound like and how was the compression before the rebuild?

Did you do any work on the head or valves, or did you just take the head off and put it back on unchanged?

Replaced the valve seats and had the head cleaned and shaved .003/inch. Compression before the rebuild was fine, until the connecting rod bearings seized which prompted the rebuild. The tapping sound almost sounds like the piston is hitting something it shouldn't. The sound gets more intense when the engine is revved above idle.

Collapsed lifter?

It's common for the lifters to take a while to pump up right after a rebuild. It should go away after a few miles though.

Check the location of the rocker arms on cylinder #3. It's easy to get them off of the valve. If they look ok then check the lifters.

Good Luck

Pulled the lifters out. The ones on #3 were collapsed so i just replaced them all, took care of the tapping noise.
