Default OEM Tail Lights are now smoking...

I smoked my OEM tail lights and kept my Altezza Carbon Fibre tails as backups. They came out great. I used Testors Transparent window tint paint that FGCA_XRL recommended. I found out that you don't need to mask off the backup light windows, just make a single light pass over this area. I used about 3 light coats and they look good.

I'm going to wax them up some more and get them to match the black body. The surface mounted led lamps I have in them are brighter than the OEM incandescent bulbs.

Sorry for the VUE not being perfectly clean, but the past few weeks dodging hurricanes has been hectic...

I can recommend to everyone using the Testors to smoke their tails... No clear coat is necessary with this paint.

Thanks again FGCA_XRL.

Looks awesome man. Now you have to do the 3rd brake light too! 1 T15 on each side the the spray nozzle pulls off. You have to kinda angle it out. And the reflectors too, they pop out from the back IIRC. Those I did with actual window tint on mine so it was easy. You could just mask the bumper off if you wanted to I suppose.

I started tinting my gf's car. She wanted it to be lighter than mine at first, but they're too light so I think I'm going to make them way dark.

Comparing the tail lights to the center brake light you can see how much of the red color disappeared. The Testors tint paint worked like a charm!

It really wasn't hard to do, especially after I discovered you did not need to mask the backup lens, just spray over it once...

I masked it for good measure. I've seen many people spray over it as part of the light a black it out too, I didn't want that.

You'll be surprised how the clear survives. I sprayed one coat over mine and they did just fine. I did have the masked for the first two coats.

Amendment...

I recommend masking them for the first two coats and then do a final third coat over the entire tail light, not concentrating on the clear lens.

They use surface mounted led's and are very bright, brighter than the incadescent bulbs. I've been using them for 2 months with no problems.

Do these require any resisitors as well?

I tried LEDs once in the VUE... didn't work so well for me. Xenons and full exterior LEDs are on the books for the smart though... so I'm looking for some good bulbs.

Most of them will have resistors supplied inside the bulbs nowdays.

No resistors are needed as long as the front incandescents are used. The front lamps offer enough of a load to keep the flasher blinking normal.

These surface mounted led lamps are the only ones bright enough to replace the OEM bulbs. I tried the other ones also, and they don't compare.

With the speed of the led's illuminating, it gives a car a little more of a safety edge when you hit the brakes. This is why the Aura has them for the brake lights.

Yes, these led lamps look really good in the TYC's. Because of the clear red lenses you can see the led assy well. These surface mounted leds lamps are night and day with the regular led lamps.

Does it say Enamel or Lacquer on your can the 2949 can i have is a lacquer and will not stick to the lights. It wipes off easily even after an hour of drying no matter how much i prepped it.

It's enamel. I checked the website again.

I had no problems having it stick to the taillights. I even waxed them once and had not problems.

Take some sandpaper and give them a good sanding, 800 grit or more coarse. The scratches will disappear with one coat of the tint.

I hit them with a pretty good sanding but stilla no go. I ordered a can off the site you posted to see if it comes in a n enamel instead of the lacquer. The hobby shop i got mine from had the right number but said lacquer on my can so i have to wait till the other paint arrives then i ll give it another go.

Looks great man. Will it be too dark to see braking if you spray with the stock brake light bulbs in?
Thanks
