Default Anyone willing to tint some tails?

Hey everybody,

After looking at numerous Vues, I would love to tint my taillights (reverse lights excluded). However, I've never done anything like this and I'm pretty sure I'd just screw up my taillights in the process. Any tips on doing this for the first time? Would anyone be willing to make and sell a set of stock tinted tails? I'm not asking because I'm too lazy to do this. I'm asking because I'm not too sure of myself when it comes to doing this.

Shane

LOL... Not laughing at you, but at my experience I had this week. I had an adventure tinting my OEM set of taillights. It didn't work out... I had to email FGCA_XRL for advice and order new tint spray...

I bought off eBay some tail light tint, not "Nite Shades". It seemed to smoke the tail lights after 4 light coats. Unfortunately the dried finish was dull and flat. Looked bad.

I bought some Krylon clear coat made for plastic and sprayed on a layer. A reaction occurred between the two types of paints and they turned milky white. I had to scrub off all the layers of paint to get back down to the red plastic. This all took hours, and I was worse off than when I started, but I learned a lot.

On FGCA_XRL's guidance I've ordered Testors plastic transparent tint spray and trying it next. FGCA_XRL I appreciate your advice! I wish I did it your way the first time.

I'm currently using TYC's Carbon Fiber tail lights, with the surface mounted led's lights looks pretty high tech...

Once I have success, we can talk and maybe my experience will give you enough information you can do a good job also...

I'm sorry to hear that. Milky white? Bet that looked nasty lol If you get yours to look nice (love to see some pics of the finished product), any advice is welcome.

Hehe, once you get the stuff that won't cause dangerous reactions it's pretty easy. Taping off my reverse lights took the longest for me (well, that and waiting).

The stuff I got was from www.hobbytown.com <--- They have retails stores around the country. I like instant gratifications, so I went and bought it at a store.

I clearcoated the fronts and they came out not nearly as glossy as they had been before. So I didn't clearcoat my rear lenses, the hobby stuff has a clearcoat in it already. Even with the several coats of polish and wax I put over top of them, I still worry about their longevity. Maybe it's just me being overly worried. One thing you also might want to try is wetsanding the lenses with the 1800 or 2000 grit sandpaper to promote adhesion. Other people wetsand after spraying each coat of tint, I also did not do that. This would get a more even layer, and especially if done on the last layer may help with the clearcoat making it not glossy.

Good luck to both of you, you'll definitely like the results.

New Orleans doesn't have any hobby shops open since Hurricane Katrina, so I had to order online. I have Transparent Black window tint, and wet look clear. All made by Testors.

It will be interesting to see how round two turns out...

Where in Ohio are you located. I want to the same and have done it before but will probably use Niteshades. If you are in the Akron Area Summit has Nightshades for under 10.00 a can. Maybe we can have a tinting party!@

Okay Dont laugh, but I had great luck with the R-Vinyl.
Smoky, dark enough, and I trimmed out around the reverse lights.
did this back in 06, and it still looks great, and glossy.
I used a hair dryer to apply over the taillight.
At first, there were air bubbles, but after two weeks they all went away and I am amazed at the look of them, and how long theyve stayed so nice.
Plus, anytime I want to change back, peel off and toss!

I actually tinted mine with actual automotive black paint reduced a ton and I am happy with the results but the vinyl does work well if you put them on correctly. You just have to work the vinyl with a hair-dryer around the curves. I did this originally on my headlights and corners and they turned out well. it is pretty easy to remove as well because I took off my smoke film and blacked out my lights all the way around with the paint as mentioned above. Not to mention the vinyl is a nice protectant against crap chipping your lights.

All you need is tranparent vinyl and it will do the trick. I used Oracal vinyl personally. you can buy the vinyl off of ebay or just find a vinyl supply shop and they should have them.

Just for comparison and I didn't have any bubbles or anything like that.

Here is a pic with the vinyl although it is kind of hard to tell in the pic:

Here are a couple with them painted:

Thanks. The enclosure sounds fine although I only have a single 10" sub hehe. I kind of wish I had another one now but I don't want to completely rebuild another enclosure or add-on another enclosure anywhere because the way I have mine designed I can still use the Cargo carrier. I put all my cleaning supplies in it when I drive to shows hehe. This one is not my main show vehicle so I am not as motivated to haul it in my trailer with gas prices these days so I get to haul around lots of crap to most shows in the Vue. If I didn't worry about having to ever carry anything in it though I probably would have built something really crazy just to do so but what I get works and it practical with having a little flash.
