My partner and I went to the drive event out in Scottsdale (Phx) tonight and had a blast! All I can say is WOW!! The Astra seems to be a very well thought out vehicle.

There was a range of Astras, XEs and XRs, in 3 and 5-door models. There was also one 5-door, 5-speed manual, which was my favorite. They also had a Civic sedan, 5-door Rabbit, and Mazda 3 wagon to make comparisons to.

The huge sunroof is really cool, although the glass does not fully open above the backseats.

There is no center armrest.

The heated seats are available on both cloth and leather.

Overall a very well-done package. The reps were friendly and seemed quite versed in their knowlesge.

Can't wait to hear what other folks have to say after participating.

Just got back from the Chicago event. Had 3 Astras - one 5-door auto XE, one 3-dr auto XR, one 3-dr manual XR. Also had one civic sedan (auto), one mazda3 5-dr (auto), and one Rabbit 5-dr (auto).

I've never been to one of these - the turnout seemed lighter than I would have expected. I was there between 6:30 and 7:30 - only about 50-75 people came through (just estimating).

Anyway...big thumbs up to the Astra. I was surprised at how good even the base model 5-dr XE is. Can't wait to do a freeway test drive.

I signed up a couple of times because I didn't get any email or anything that said we had reservations.

Now, tonight is the night for it, and I don't have anything in hand. Would you guys go anyway without it and tell them that you never received anything?

Thanks,

Laura

2007 VUE 2.2L
Default Re: Sign Up to Drive the '08 Astra Before Its Available

I went to the event in Orange County tonight. The course was too small to experience much, but we had fun. The 5-door XR with the manual transmission was the best of the lot. All of the others were automatics and felt slow by comparison.

I thought it was interesting that the only other Saturn I saw in the parking lot was another Vue. I think it was Saturn Girl? Most of the other cars were Fords and various Japanese models. Maybe the Astra will produce "conquest" sales for Saturn and GM.

That Vue was me :-). It needs a bath really bad, but I opted to wait until all the ash clears the air first.

I agree - the course seemed a little small and there weren't many straight-aways where you could really accelerate.

Since it was dark, it was difficult for me to determine which car I was in (ie XE hatchback or XR hatchback 5 doors). I did get to drive the red 3 door XR, which for some reason, I didn't like as much. To me, the seats were uncomfortable and it didn't feel as nimble as the 5 door.

All in all though, it was a pretty fun experience. Last time I went to one, it was the ION one that was held in the front parking lot. That was cool, because there was ALOT of food, and we got goodie bags filled with really neat stuff (cd from GOO GOO Dolls, the blue hot wheels ION, etc).

I didn't get an email back confirming I had signed up, but my name was there anyway.

All in all, a great way to spend a Thursday night

Happy Re: Sign Up to Drive the '08 Astra Before Its Available

the drive was nice. I drove the Astra 3-door XR manual... 3 times. I took only one picture since I was more interested in driving and prying information from the GM folks there. they wouldn't confirm or deny the Astra Red Line (turbo) would be coming to America. OnStar works... D'oh. don't push the red button with the cross on it.

Nice meeting you at the drive, Eric. A shame they didn't give us much of a course to play with.

I did the opposite, and ran the course in my own car, a Protege5, on the way out. Couldn't go too crazy, had groceries in the back Needs more roll stiffness, and clearly an older chassis than the cars at the event. Too easy to spin the inside front tire in hard turns. But I still love driving the car around town.

I'll have to drive an Astra again when they reach dealers, see how it feels in the real world.
