Default Mad as hell about oil filters

Today I decided to change my oil a little early before 3000 miles,
I have been using NAPA 1348 Gold Filter on my 97 SL1 which is made here in the USA.
This is supposed to be a premium oil filter.
However when in a hurry under the car, I noticed the replacement filter was
made in China and after closer visual inspection things where not the same, Such as,
oil inlet holes to filter median, 6 for China as 7 for USA, anti drain back valve,China looks like black hard rubber, Where as USA made is orange silicone rubber,The steel backing plate looks far more better for the USA filter. NAPA claims on the box"The Original Gold NAPA Filter" I paid good money for a premium filter at NAPA, and it looks like I got screwed.
Even the boxes that the filters come in are not the same, I made scans of the box tops to prove my point, I also have pics of the filters to show what the differences are.
At the end, Im just trying to help others not make the same mistake, Shop carefully!
Box top on left shows China version, while on right shows US version, notice larger
print for bar code label, also fonts are different sizes
As for the pics of the filters, It seems there is a size limitation as to what I can upload to the WEB site,I will try to get them up shortly .

I started to avoid buying stuff from China too. For car parts i only buy what is available, but for other stuff i buy on internet, i ensure not to buy something that will come from China. Better pay a little more then somehow supporting slavery. Same thing with amazon. I avoid that place at all cost.

You didn't get screwed. You paid $10 for a filter and they sold you a filter. They sometimes change the filter manufacturer. If you want to know who makes it then don't buy the house brand filter.

Also, use the 1516 versus the 1348. It is taller, but fits fine and gives you a little more capacity.

So here im back at this again trying to up load the pics of the filter,
As everyone can see,the China version is on the left with 6 inlet holes, the USA is on the right with 7 inlet supply holes,The crimping as to where the steel mounting plate attaches to the can on the china unit is minimal as compared to the U.S. version is more robust. Also take note of the anti-drain back valve.
Sorry, but im going back to my Hastings filters.

It's not just oil filters. Unfortunately it will take WW3 to fix all the offshoring that was done to our manufacturing base. Stand by...

Don't give Russia any ideas...

Anywho, back on topic. I was wanting to do my oil over the summer and I always pick AC Delco for my vehicles. Imagine my surprise when the box had more Chinese characters than English on it.

Sad. Sad, sad day.

AC Delco has been a reboxer for at least a decade now. They may be "true OEM" for certain lines or price points but overall they're no more OEM than 'NAPA Gold' is.

At least they have access to the design data and drawings! I leave it up to the standards of AC Delco to pick the adequate part.

NAPA has sourced their filters from WIX since at least 70s.

Wix is doing a lot of production in China for a few years, now.

Hastings, Purolator, and Baldwin are also good manufacture, as is
Mann, and Bosch.

There are a couple online shops which sell WIx and some other filters,
I've used Fleet Filter (from Texas) for about 15 (or30...don't recall!)
years, half price as at NAPA.

My 'new'-to-me 2000 DOHC came with a jammed filter, and I'ved used the
Mobil M209A (??) {M1-209A?) from Walmart - a premium item - to try to clean out the accumulatet particulates, for last 4 years. On my '97 I
always used the Wix 51516.

I recently tried to look up a Saturn filter there, and they did no longer list it.
Maybe try the 51515 51516 numbers, as they are old Ford part numbers.
..........
Product sourced in china not necessarily bad.
