1992 SL1
Default New member with 1992 barn find.

Hello! I recently got very lucky to find a 1992 SL1 local to my shop on CL. I figured I should keep up my personal tradition of joining forums for all the cars o own so here I am.

The car in question is a brown on brown manual with zero options other than AC, power steering, and the mid level tape deck. The car has been sitting inside a detached garage with gravel floor for the last 21 years, it even still has it original tires, battery and all paperwork. It is in nearly perfect cosmetic shape and has absolutely everything present it left the factory with, I'm currently in the process of repairing the one real issue it has in the form of a failed brake hard line and of course replacing all fluids/filters/maintenance items.

So far I'm very enchanted by the car, the simplicity is wonderful and it's extremely easy to work on and parts are basically free compared to my daily. I l was able to buy literally everything needed to refresh the car for less than what I normally spend on an oil change. It also happens to be my first manual car and first 4cyl/non-V8 I've ever owned, also the first car I've ever owned with manual windows etc......it's like I'm stepping back in time every time I sit down in it. Oh I should probably mention it's older than I am as well!

I will be keeping updates coming once my rockauto order comes in, I'll try and write little guides but I'm sure all repair procedures and methods are already well documented here and I'll likely be the one to learn a lot of the idiosyncrasies of this model. Lastly I have no plans at all to modify the car and it will be historical plated and spend the majority of its life in a heated garage on a battery tender.

And since a new car thread is worthless without pictures here is a gallery of the car as found, and back at my house. I'll have more pictures up soon of the car cleaned, waxed, and pretty.

https://imgur.com/a/aSTN2ek

I look forward to talking with and getting to know everyone here!

Wow! What an incredible find. What is the story behind that car? Older person make the original purchase? How did it sit idle for so long? Anyway good luck with it. And stick shift besides!
What did you pay?

Thank everyone! Yeah it was really lucky to be honest.

The car was bought by the only owner as his last car, he unfortunately fell ill and passed in 2000 and the car sat in his garage up till now as his daughter is converting the house into a rental. The car simply sat with no driver when he passed, I actually got in really well with the sellers and they are very happy the car is going to someone who will care for it vs being handed to a kid or something.

I ended up paying $595 plus $81.14 for repairs and about $31 for insurance monthly. Historical plates are one time fee

I'm curious.

I don't think that is an SL1. I think it's an SL.

I believe that the one tell-tale of an SL was that it had no passenger side rear-view mirror on the door. The SL1 had the mirror, as did the SL2 of course.

They also didn't come with power steering, but it could be ordered. Plus those photos show a different wheel cover/hub cap than the SL1 and SL2, which also points to the SL.

Being an actual SL, it's a bit of a rarity.

The SL was the cheapest of the cheap S-series. The VALUE Saturn. And most options couldn't be ordered.

You might have a rare beast there!

SL had no options by default (base radio is AM/FM only) while SL1 got PS and pass side mirror. SL could be optioned with anything making it virtually indistinguishable from a SL1.

I believe the option list is: Auto Trans, A/C, Power Steering, Pass Side Mirror, ABS, Rear Disc Brakes (when paired with ABS), Traction Control (when ABS+Automatic Trans for 1st gen), CC, AM/FM/Tape, AM/FM/Tape w/ EQ, AM/FM/CD, AM/FM/CD w/EQ and a 6 disc changer (12 disc for 2nd/3rd gen) became available on "w/EQ" radios.
All SOHC engine cars came with 14" steel wheels but could be factory optioned with 15" alloys. Not sure on the hubcap patterns for either of the steel wheel sizes.

Nearly anything from one model can be swapped to another model with little effort so it's easy to find non-factory options on cars today.

I just couldn't do that to this car, it's too nice plus I already have 6 other cars lol! Rather put the miles on my LS or A8 than this honestly, they are easier to replace.

You can't get an experience like this SL easily anymore. Modern stuff all feels really similar and sanitized in comparison.

As I posted earlier, the SL had no passenger side mirror on the door.

It came base with manual steering and manual transmission and the single-cam engine. It also had a specific hubcap for the SL, and a downgraded cloth on the seats. It had only 3 factory options available to order: power steering, automatic transmission, and air conditioning. No other options were available, the idea being that if you wanted a car with more options, you should move up to the SL1 or SL2, where those items were included as 2- or 3-level packages.

At the time, it was common for the DEALER to install passenger side mirrors and/or a radio upgrade, as these were not available pre-installed from the factory.

Theoretically, there would be an SL3 which would come with a V6 (which, as we know now, never happened). Saturn decided that the V6 car would link them too closely to American manufacturing, which they were trying to avoid so as to be seen as a competitor with the Asian imports. Supposedly the SL3 concept car was rebadged and sold as an Oldsmobile.

"50351, it's in the picture of the instrument cluster"???
How do you get to more photos of the car, all I see is just a front shot in a barn.
Clicking NEXT, does not reveal any more photos of the Saturn.

Wow! What a great find! I've been a Saturn owner since 1994, and just love them! I'm the original owner of the 2001 SL2 I have now.

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but this forum has over one million posts on just the S series, so at this point I think it's fair to say that every possible problem has been solved. And the best part is that it's a friendly and kind group of people. Welcome!

Nice find!

A few things of note... as I'm not much in the Saturn fold anymore. I periodically check in here from time to time...

If your intention is to keep this for awhile, and putting Historical plates on it...
I would do the swap on the Manual shifter, with the E-Clip Stainless Shifter Bushing- there's plenty of info here on it... I would also consider doing the 25 tooth Odometer Gear swap as well- Available from OdometerGears.com I wrote the writeup, that their website lifted from this website.

Since you are going the route of Historical plates in Ohio (I'm in Cincinnati)... you will only be able to drive the car for mostly car shows/maintenance and the like.

I just purchased Historical Plates for my 1994 Homecoming Edition... and Now I need to find a good storage place for my car.

Nice find. Truly a cool barn find. If it's been sitting that long, it will probably need to have a lot of things lubed, as well as the rubber aspects replaced- Tires, Serp Belt, Motor Mounts as well.
