Default Fuel Gauge on empty, no start

I have a 2000 sl1 and have been having intermittant problems with it starting. The starter and battery is fine and the fuel tank is full. But periofically it will not start and the fuel gauge shows empty. I let it set for a while and later it starts and runs fine. Is this possibly a Crank Sensor issue?

I would start by checking if any codes are stored, you will need a scan tool for this. Some auto parts stores will scan for free.

Once you know what, if any, codes are stored, we will have a better clue as to what is going on.

Otherwise you should check to make sure the battery connections are well and free of corrosion. Also, inspect both main and rear engine grounds at top of transaxle housing for tight connection as well as the connection to starter solenoid, if you can.

It kinda sounds like your PCM wasn't getting powered up. Verify that both the PCM B PCM 1 fuses in Underhood Fuse Block are OK with a voltmeter.

When it doesn't start, narrow it down to a no-fuel or no-spark issue.

To check for spark, remove the #1 and #4 spark plug wires at the coil pack. Observe the exposed towers while someone turns the key to START. If you don't see spark jumping between the towers, it's a no-spark problem.

To check for fuel (partial test), turn the key to RUN (but NOT to START) and listen. You should hear the "whir" of the fuel pump from the back of the car.

I'd bet a nickel that the above fuel pump check will fail. If you're seeing no fuel gauge reading, I'm guessing something is happening to the wiring going to the tank (the one thing that would be common between a dead fuel gauge and a no-start).
