Default Weird 1995 SW2 electrical problem

Hey folks,

I'm a newish owner of a 1995 SW2 with about 196K on it. It's a great car but it's got this little problem. If I start the car, say to pull it out of the garage, it'll start right up. Then when I put it back after I've finished in the garage, say 5-10 minutes later, it'll short out on startup. The lights on the dash will go nuts, I can hear the relays tripping under the dash panel on the passenger side, the engine will have started but peter out after running a touch rough, and the clock will go dead. If I disconnect the negative battery cable I can usually reset things and the car will start again just fine. Or if I let it sit for an hour or so, it'll start fine.

I can sort of reproduce this if I run the power windows when they're closed-- by putting a load on the motors to close when the windows are already closed will get the flashing dash condition, and the engine may stall (I don't do this one anymore, usually tempted to play with it when I'm driving!)

Could all this be cause by a bad window relay? Or the start solenoid, or a bad firewall ground? I cleaned up the main positive and negative body grounds, but still get this problem. I'd think it was the start solenoid, or even a bad battery cell, but otherwise it starts fine except in certain situations...

I hate car electrical with a passion, and so far these forums have been a great resource for me... can anyone give me some suggestions about what this might be?

How old is the battery?

Are the battery cables clean of corrosion?

I would say; from what you describe; it sounds like you have an old battery in this car.

Get the battery tested at your favorite auto store and see what it the results are...it should read 12 Volts at a standstill, and with the car running (lights and interior heater) it should read 13-14 Volts (which would tell you that you have a good alternator).


I suspect the battery.

I do too, but I want a couple opinions. No corrosion on the terminals. It's about 11.5 volts at standstill, about 13.2 when the engine is running. All that means is that the alternator is good... still could be a cell about to go, I s'pose. Thanks!

Even if it's at 11.5 at a standstill...you should have 12 Volts without the car running, there is something that is drawing some current.

Replace the battery.
