Mad WHY is everybody hating on Saturn??

Alright, lets try something.
Post the URL's to all of the stupid articles making fun of Saturn here.
What do people have against the cars anyway?
They look good, they are reliable, cheap and so forth. You get my point,
so why do people treat Saturns like Yugos?
Here is an article that particularly pissed me off:
http://www.greencarreports.com/news/...nct-saturn-sc1

Yeah, I hear you blackbeard. Even your article that "praised" the author's S-series as a wise purchase decision for its value and reliability and economy.... it still managed to insult the car and its place in history.

In this post, I referenced this Popular Mechanics article.

I think the S-series was a lot cooler looking than the competition, which was all very generic and bland looking. And the assertion that the fuel economy was mediocre is also just wrong, along with some of the other assertions in the article.

It's easy to hate on a car that rusts worse than an AMC, and then it's owners go on to claim "no rust on body". It's there, you wouldn't be driving it if you could see it but Saturn had to do a "lets just bondo this bad boy" type fix from the factory.

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

And to the next dooooshbag who writes in an article about the "bland" or "boring" styling of the Saturn S-series

I offer up all the exciting and daring styling of a 1992 Toyota Corolla:

Or, perhaps, they'd prefer a 1991 Honda Civic:
.

Maybe a 1991 Ford Escort:

Try a 1999 Mazda Protege:

Or perhaps, we can compare the exciting 1996-98 Honda civic coupe

with a 2nd Gen Saturn SC2:

People can be such idiots.

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about here. If you're referring to S-series cars rusting, I maintain that they resist rusting far better than the competition and that repairing or replacing the parts that do rust is much easier and less expensive than the competition and that body cosmetic areas are, for the most part, impervious to rust, making the cars hold their appearance much, much better in the salt belt than anything in its class.

Meh. Who really cares? The article was poorly-written, with grammatical errors and half-baked, failed attempts to use literary mechanisms such as vicarious self-effacement (expressed through a car, in this case), anthropomorphization, simile, and irony. Like this line, for example:
"The sad part was, they were either too expensive, had too many miles on them or looked like Billy found a stash of controlled substances and decided to have some fun with an Erector Set."
Grammatical errors aside, what picture, exactly, is the "Billy" reference trying to convey? Unless there's some cultural reference that I'm missing, that's a pretty lame piece of writing. Neal tried to construct a metaphor to express a visual image, and failed miserably at both.

If I had a couple of billion dollars to play with, and I decided to buy the remnants of Saturn from GM, the first cars I'd produce would be new versions of the S-Series. They'd be almost identical to the originals except for minor modifications that time has revealed to be advisable (like improved oil control rings, for example). I'd hire OldNuc, fdryer, and the other gurus of this forum and pay them really big bucks to identify and implement those improvements; but otherwise, the cars would be as identical as possible to the originals.

Then I'd sell the cars with their original model names and 10-year, 150,000-mile warranties. And you know what? They'd sell. They'd also be made fun of, especially by the younger people, who would call them cars for old farts who are trying to re-live their youth; and by the greenies, who think there's something "smart" and noble about riding around in a skateboard that makes Fred Flinstone's car look stylish, and which can't get out of its own way even with both occupants pushing it -- and still burns more gas than my 2001 SC1.

So I wouldn't lose any sleep over Neal's disdain for Saturns. Even he admitted that his Saturn purchase was one of the best financial decisions he ever made. Whatever point he was trying to make about the cars' styling was lost in his own lame writing style.

Perhaps he should at least get an "A" for irony.

In the past 20 years, I have owned three Fieros, two Saturns, and two Miatas. I am so used to driving cars that people make fun of, I'm not sure what I'd do if I had a car that was admired by the masses.

"Like an AA meeting, itís time for me to stand up and introduce myself. My name in(sic) Sid, and I have a Saturn problem. I used to own a 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais with a 5 speed stick..." After it rusted out so badly that the rear brakes were no longer reliable, I ordered a new Saturn SW2. I've been driving my SW2 for over 18 years. Some people are telling me I need to quit but I just can't bring myself to do it. The Saturn still looks good, it still runs good, it's been paid off for 18 years. And actually it's quicker than the Cutlass was, it handles better and it gets far better gas mileage. It's still a joy to drive and I still look out at my Saturn in a parking lot and think it's the prettiest car in the lot. I need help, help help!!!

I really think GM screwed up when they sold me this car. They should never think of making a Saturn 2 with the light weight rust-free body panels and changing things like the oil ring problem, adding variable valve timing and a 6 speed transmission. They may end up with a car that people would never sell. Then where would GM be???

Most people that own and drive the "S" series respect them. Consumer Reports
had them on their most reliable used car list.My SL2 is not a Garage Queen, and at 250 K miles It's more fun to drive then the German GTI I owned, and Much more reliable. My work commute is better suited to an Armored personal
carrier ( Chicago's South side) ;APC's have no style and don't handle well.

That Greenie report used to be called "Damning with faint praise", the writer
should crawl back into his compost pile to stay warm.

Long Live Saturn and the people that own and drive them!

Just wait............... when gas goes to $4/gal. Anyone remember when gas hit $4/gal? In NYC, newscasts interviewed suv owners crying about fill ups costing them $$$ and within a few weeks there was a sudden trade-in for cars............... with better fuel economy. Politics will determine whether we have a repeat of what occurred in the past. "Those ignoring the past are doomed to repeat it."

Having been intimately involved in Saturn rust repairs -- some visible and some hidden, you have some messed up cars if the structural components under the plastic panels are in worse shape than the ones you can see that are exposed to the elements.
