Do you live very close to it? It would be great if someone could do a good inspection before driving all that way and finding out that the dealer exaggerated about the condition.
It is about 3 hours from here. Have you called the seller to see what they have to say? They are taking offers so it is not flying off the lot.... Offer up steel engraved pictures of Ben Franklin ad it should go cheap.

Thanks a lot for the help! I'll call the seller next week to find out more info. I agree that flashing Benjamins is one of the best methods of haggling

1998 Saturn SW2 - $2600

I called the dealer on this one, and he said the only problem with it is some scuffing/scratching on the right rear bumper. It doesn't have cruise, but I can obviously add that. He said it doesn't use oil, doesn't have rust, and that he did a compression test that returned about 180 for all cylinders. The only question he couldn't answer is whether the A/C works.

So, what would be a good price for this? And how do you guys usually haggle. I've never haggled over an inexpensive car like this, so I'm not sure exactly what to offer. Do I offer $1600 and try to get it for around $2,000 or $2,100? Or do I just say that all I can afford is $2,000, so take it or leave it?

It's a 5 1/2-hour drive for me, but I think it's worth it considering how few miles are on it and the condition it seems to be in.

Edit: I spoke with the owner of the dealership. He drives a Saturn and said that all he sells are Saturns. He seemed to know most of the issues with these (where to check for rust, what compression should be, how to add cruise, etc.).

If my quest deserves a new thread, please let me know. I have one more thought. Would it be best to haggle over the phone? It will be obvious from my plates that I drove a long ways to look at the car (unless I lie, which I won't do). IMO that gives him extra haggling power. However, if he's risking me not even looking at the car, then I think that gives me more haggling power.

Anyways, I thought I could call and say I'll drive to buy the car on Saturday if we can agree on price in advance, and then haggle over the phone. What do you guys think? I have no experience with traveling to buy a car and only one experience with haggling over the price of a car, so any help would be much appreciated

BTW, I can't make the trip until March 2, so I have some time to figure this out.

Keep the thread here - If he doesn't come down a penny it is still a nice car. Have cash to wave in his face AND be prepared to walk away, go home and wait for him to call you back. OR make the low offer over the phone and when he calls a week or two later with a better price ... tell him you still have to see the car. Also research the KBB and Edmunds price to have ammunition for haggling. If you 'walk away' in person or by phone, it gives you the advantage.

This is Shawn we are talking about .......

He is always on the look out for "steals" or fixer-upers........

Some of the stuff he gets is absolutely amazing

Let's see recent cars from memory:
98 White Hot, 3rd gen SC2 (front end damage) @ 70k ish, 95 SW2 manual @ 170k, what 3-4 SWP's ....... Plus number of NICE!!!!!! other cars.......

I would not be surprise if one of these days he post pics of a JDM Saturn....

He also has found HCE in the yard.... (I have the cluster .... should find out millage on it sometime haha

not only does he have the ability to get awesome Saturns (no matter where he is at)

He knows how-to fix them to good running condition..... and nothing is done half-way..... He most defiantly is a Saturn saver..... that is until who ever he sells them to does not listen to his advice (Which is 100% correct when in-regard to S-series) and mess up the car that he sold to them.....

BTW: awesome looking SW Shawn

and to top

Thanks for the help! I think I'll go the phone route, and I'll be sure to "walk away" by phone if the price isn't right. I'd rather not haggle in person, because I'm not going to make an 11-hour round trip to walk away and hope he calls back later . I will walk away if there's something wrong with the car that should result in a much lower price, and the dealer won't budge.

From my research, it looks like $2,600 is a really good price for the car, especially because of the low miles. Edmunds is the closest with $2,849 dealer retail and $1,864 private party. NADA and kbb both have $3,400 for dealer retail and about $2,500 for private party.

I'd love to get it for about $2,200 OTD. That would leave plenty of money in my budget for adding cruise and doing some preventative maintenance. There's currently a loophole in Missouri where I wouldn't have to pay MO sales tax when buying an out-of-state vehicle. There's legislation to close that loophole that passed the senate and has gone to the house. Hopefully I can buy my car before that passes and save about $150 in taxes.

lol. I actually emailed my friend who is a House rep and asked him how long he thinks it will take the house to pass the bill. It spent a month in the Senate before passing, and it was first read in the House on Monday. If they take a month, then I should have until mid March at least. I'm going to register the car the Monday after I get it just in case it's the date of registration and not the date of sale that matters.

Thanks! I've decided to keep my gold 2000 sw2 with 220k on it. I've just put too much work into it to get anything out of it. I'm going to sell the silver 2000 SW2 in the picture. I've thought about swapping the leather seats into my wagon, but I think I'll keep Silver original and let someone enjoy it.

I just happen to have a recently surplussed Gen-2 module and wheel switch pod. You may get it for the 2200 but I would start at 2000 and see where you go from there. There is nothing broke or missing that is that expensive to fix. I would be on the phone ASAP.
