1999 SL2
Default 1999 Saturn SL2 Aux input?

Hi, I've got a 99 SL2, with the factory radio, I'd like to get an aux input for my satellite radio (Sirius), MP3 player, and laptop. Right now, I have a hardwired FM modulator connected to the satellite radio, but this obviously won't work for the others..

I've found http://peripheralelectronics.com/web/aux2car.asp , which seems like it should work. My stero has an aux button already, but there's no seperate input on the back.

Does the aux2car device seem like a solution, or is there an easier way to do it that I'm missing? Seems like a pretty simple install..

I did some basic research on this stuff... the aux button is for a cd changer which some cars had. I believe the wiring should be in the trunk and that is what these 3rd party solutions tap into... they're expensive as hell and you'd be better of buying an aftermarket deck.

If the head unit has an AUX button, it probably already has an AUX input jack.

the aux input jack is the cd changer connections I'm talking about out in the trunk. Read the owners manual, it's all explained in there.

For the cost of one of these systems you are better off getting an aftermarket deck and dash kit.

I too, have an OEM Saturn CD head unit with the "AX" button in my 95SL1 and have been thinking about the Peripheral or some similar type of adaptor so I could use a satellite radio or i-pod. I know an aftermarket head would be an easier solution(my son's 96SC1 has a Clarion with aux in) BUT the total lack of "stealability" has kept the factory head in my car. It really doesn't sound all that bad(with some help from some Boston Acoustics 6.5's) so I'm sticking with it for now. Having been in the car audio business for almost 30 years, I've seen adaptors from many different companies; some good, some bad. Peripheral has been around for quite a while so I would think their product should work.
P.S.- i just found a 2 year old thread very similar to this one- and guess who started it? Tatusmi, who now has gone aftermarket but at that time wanted to keep his OEM deck!

yep... at the time I was all about keeping the factory deck. Then I realized it was a waste of time and money to try and get the ipod wired into it.

What deck did you end up going with? I'm looking for an easy/not so expensive way of getting my ipod plugged into my car.

I bought a Pioneer head unit w/ iPod module. Ended up costing a bit more than an adapter for the stock unit but worth it, IMO.

thanks for the reply. I'm looking into unit right now and deciding on whether I want to go with the interface or just an aux in. I don't really need the interface I suppose, because I can just look at my ipod to see what is playing/switch songs etc.

I would think you could find some kind of plug adapter at Radio Shack and pull those CD changer input wires back into the cab for hooking up to the iPod. If they are regular RCA plugs, it should be easy to find an adapter.

What do you mean by that? does that mean no way? I haven't had a chance to take a look at the cd changer wires yet. My radio has an AX button, I'm guessing that's the AUX selector for the cd changer?

I mean that it's a weird-shaped plastic plug located in your trunk. It is intended for a factory cd changer.

There are adapters which you can get for it so that you can plugin your iPod but they are expensive (between $200 and $300 cdn when I priced them). For that price, I'd buy a new deck w/ a 1/4" AUX input. Just use the iPod's controls to select music.

That's what I'm thinking about doing. I read about a couple of them, and that if the aux jacks were just for minidisc players or something like that. I think I may just go to the store and try them out when I get a chance.

BAH!! Wires are wires! Hack the plug off and connect standard RCA jacks. I hate proprietary junk and will hack and slash just to defy the maker and show them they can't wrangle me!!

I know you're joking... but just so someone else doesn't get the impression that this is actually a good idea, I wouldn't suggest trying that. There is WAY more to the GM wiring in that connector than just an L&R RCA hookup.

that is a good idea if it were actually that easy. Oh well. I'll probably go check out some decks when I get a chance and just bring my ipod with me to see how it sounds.

I produce and mix music so near excellent sound quality is a must. I can't have anything that would be less than the stock stereo. By the way, how do the stock stereo's in the 978 sl2's compare to what's out on the market for aftermarket decks?

It doesn't sound like it matters now but my stock CD player has an AX button. I switched in a stock tape deck 'cause the CD player part doesn't work and it only has the 1 connector on the back.

Just because it's got the AX/AUX button doesn't mean it's got the connector.

(it's also got a few other buttons that weren't mentioned in a quick look through the manual)

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

I dunno. My 92 has the factory cassette deck and the original speakers and its the best sounding system I've had in any car I've owned. But then again, I've never spent more than 100 bones for a deck or speakers.
