Default Fuel Injector cleaner's are for real?

Hi,

I've always added a bottle of cleaner after a new oil change of Gumout. That's at 3000 miles. I've had friends tell me that it's a waste of money,
that most unleaded fuels of today, have additives that clean them anyway.

Any thoughts, facts, history, or personnel choice of cleaners, would be appreciated.
Thanks,
TG...

In the 90s when port injection became widely used there were issues with injector clogging. IMHO today's gasolines have pretty good detergency.
Having said that, I use a bottle of Chevron Techron (which is often considered the best cleaner) about 2x per year.

I agree with Bill and would use an injector cleaner often enough. I also agree that Chevron Techron is the best on the market. Here in San Diego you can pick up a bottle that will treat a 12 gallon tank for a little over $5. I've found that injector cleaner is so important to the smooth operation of my car, I send a bottle through at least every second oil change but wait until you are just about ready to change the oil and run it through just before changing the oil. (The cleaner can mix and affect the oil in your car so using it just before you change oil saves any worry about that.)

Do you guys think it's better to use fuel injector cleaner, or opt for the fuel system cleaner? Chevron Techron comes in both types. Any negatives for the latter?

It's not a bad idea to use some techron once in a while. I also add seafoam now and then to help keep things clean. Others here add a few ounces of MMO with each fill up. It is really up to you.

This is what I was told by a Saturn dealer once when I asked the tech the question.

I was told in general not to use anything to help clean the fuel ingectors. He said just taking it out on the hwy for a few miles and or getting your engine reved up ocasionally will burn any buildup in the system. He did say that if you live in a city and rarely do hwy driving, then use a bottle once a year at most. If you use it too much, it can damage your injectors.

I personally have never used it on any Saturn yet and have yet to have a problem.

yea I think running a bottle of techron wont hurt just make sure you follow the directions exactly. most of the time damage is cause when people dont follow directions. and applefool how well does seafoam work? I was going to try it the other day but wasnt sure just how well it worked.

Their is one brand that is worth it.
It really works.
Sure it cleans the injectors but the main purpose is to elimante carbon from your engine's compustion chamber (head). It will elimante and prevent ping, if your timimg is correct.

Redline SL-1 fuel injector cleaner.

"It puts techron to shame".
It's hard to find, i buy from an online mail order company.

Try googling for a supplier.
or call RedLine, itself.
I think the # is:

1-800-684-7958

In this article (link below), you can read (from the experts) "Problems with Pinging".
