2003 ION-3 Sedan
Dizzy How do I change front wheel bearing on the 2003 Ion?

I have a 2003 and the right front wheel bearing is going bad. I need to know the tools and step by step procedure needed to get my Saturn rolling again. Oh, and if anyone knows how long I can drive on it with a bad bearing or the signs that the wheel is about to fall off...that would be super too!

I did search before I asked the question. But I just searched again and I can't find it. Maybe I'm not searching for it correctly.

However, I purchased a repair manual and I'm going to have a friend of mine that has changed out lots of wheel bearing hubs to do it. Hopefully it will all turn out ok.

What is the car doing that you think the wheel bearings are going out?

I ask this because I have a 2004 Ion and it's making some "clunk" or "dull thud" sound sometimes when I'm driving. Sometimes backing out the driveway I can hear it do it once and when driving over bumps sometimes I hear it. Sometimes it's coming from the left and sometimes from the right. Can't quite figure out what it is. No shimmying or pulling or anything like that.

Assuming lack of air tools.

Work safely, propelry support the car on jack stands and don't do anything stupid that will kill or injure you.

Loosen/remove the axle shaft nut with the wheel on the ground.

Remove the wheel.
Remove the brake caliper, bracket, rotor and disconnect the ABS sensor wiring/connector if you have it.
Finish removing the axle nut if not aff all of the way yet.
Carefully tap the end of the shaft (don't bugger up the threads) to free it in the bearing so that it moves back, to the trans.
Pull the the bolts from the bearing, they come in from the back just to be a pain. Be careful so that you don't wreck the CV boot.
Remove the wheel bearing. You may need to beat it out.
Remember how the spacer plate between the bearing and the knuckle goes.

Install new.

Torque wheel bearing bolts evenly (ie not one all the way in then the next) to 115 Nm (85 lb ft).

Axle shaft nut 110 Nm (81 lb ft).
...
A lousy day in paradise is still a day in paradise.

sounds like you have bad stabilizer bar end bushings. A bad wheel bearing makes a muffled grinding noise when you change direction.

When I had new tires put on at Sears, they told me that I had a bad wheel bearing on the passenger front. But I can hear it. It's like a grinding, "racecar" engine type noise when I'm driving. I thought it was the tires, and that's why I went and got new ones.
