2000 SL2
Default Need a new key!

2000 SL2, 185000 miles, Auto-tragic.

We are third owners. No fob, no original key. Using copy handed to us. Yes, I know I should have kept that as a master, but that time has passed.

Key is really worn down, and I'm thinking it has little time left. So, I'd like to get a new key/ignition or new key made from existing.

I don't know where to start (every pun intended) or even what options are possible.

Can I pull the ignition switch and take it to a locksmith to have a new key cut? Can I call the dealer and see about getting a GM key? eBay? Teacher so trying to avoid any major expense on a 21 year old car.

Thanks in advance.

Take your ownership to a GM dealer parts department and tell them you would like to have a key cut from VIN. This should cost anywhere from $10-$20 based on others documented within this site. This will get you the best results with the least amount of work.

Now go down to a lock smith and make a copy. The $30 is your lifetime virgin to make copies from.

I was in the same situation a couple of years ago. I went to a local locksmith, took my plate registration in (for the vin number). 30 minutes later I had new keys. Simple as that. Cost may vary.

Followed through on Laser's suggestion of a Locksmith.
One I called suggested I stick with Dealer for VIN key cut.
Just FYI.

I think he meant to take your new dealer cut from VIN key and make a copy or two at a locksmith or hardware store. Keep the dealer cut one tucked away in case in the future you have to replace your worn key. Use the copies for everyday until they are worn.

Just to be clear - I had the locksmith cut new fresh keys using the vin number only. The locksmith did not copy an existing key. He input the vin into his software and it cut the key to the specs for that vin.

Some locksmiths lack the SW.
Some may not know which blanks will work.

Best bet is a cut from VIN, which all dealers, and some locksmiths, do.

Then, as suggested, have a copy made for daily use.
